It did spin, but it defeated Stokes in terms of its length, it wasn't as close to him as he thought, and he was left groping at it.

Ashwin is in the wickets, it turned, it was a little wide and Stokes was reaching for it. A thin edge and safely pouched by the keeper. Safe to say, not the start England would have been looking for.

Why do people get by frustrated by Moeen Ali? He's our first-choice finger-spinner, and he's scored two hundreds in this series - his batting is a huge bonus.

In Test cricket, he's a natural number six or seven. He's never going to become a Greg Chappell or a Virat Kohli. The best solution is to find a specialist number four.

England have to take every single change that comes their way to win in this series. India, because they create more chances, can afford to drop a few catches. England will want in excess of 450 and see if they can hold on from there.

England batsman Joe Root says he needs to "grow up a bit" after his angry reaction to being given out on day one.

"There was frustration there," said Root. "If I get punished then I'm sure it's deserved."

No news yet Joe, an anxious wait, like sweating on a speeding ticket.

To stick up for the batsmen briefly, how often when bowlers bowl a bad delivery, do you see them look at the soles of their boots, or at the bowling crease?

I jokingly said to Jonny Bairstow that "I wished someone smashed me to cover when he was on 49". He took it quite well, but he said someone was moving by the sightscreen and he should have moved away. It reminded me of another Yorkshireman, Ray Illingworth - he was never out.

England are almost in Mumbai territory here, as they got to 400 there and it still wasn't enough. I sense from the way Root and Moeen played yesterday that England are determined to play positively, and if Stokes gets in for a while, it could get interesting.

The late, great Roy Castle - one for the teenagers - would certainly have admired the dedication shown by Moeen Ali yesterday. Dropped on nought and looking as scratchy as a woollen roll neck, the left-hander battled his way to an unbeaten 120 and will resume with Ben Stokes on five and England 284-4. Will there be any Record Breakers in the England team today?
