During the break, TMS will be speaking to England assistant coach Paul Farbrace, who will be taking charge of the South for a new series of one-day games against the North in the UAE in March. The idea is that players just outside of the England one-day set-up will be able to press their claims. The squads have just been announced...

There was a moment or two before lunch when England could have gone down for 380 but the new lad Dawson and Rashid have played splendidly. They've got England into thinking 500, I always think if you get 550 you are controlling the game.

That's tea, the end of a very good session for England and one that Liam Dawson isn't likely to forget for a long time. His half-century on debut has kept the India wolves from the door. England just about have their noses in front.

I won a pair of tickets to an ODI against the West Indies at Edgbaston the day before play. My best mate thought about pulling a sicky but then decided his boss was a cricket fan who'd understand and told the truth when asking for a day off at 16 hours notice. It was a good call - we bumped into his boss within ten minutes of arriving at the ground!

Chance! A mix-up leaves Broad stranded in the middle of the pitch. He turns and tries to get back, but isn't even in the frame when Jadeja's throw scoots past. At the other end, Liam Dawson is batting like AB de Villiers. A cover drive on the up is the best shot he's played. Virat Kohli, in the background, puts his hands on his hips and shakes his head. "I wish I could bat like that".

Ashwin is trying to buy a wicket. He did it this morning to Moeen, throwing it up and teasing him outside off stump and Moeen hit him for a six and a four!

    Broad 17 from 14

As expected, Broad is looking to give Ashwin some humpty. An ugly swipe results in an inside edge past the wicketkeeper for three, with a drive over the covers reaching the fence. England have added 127 runs since the fall of the seventh wicket.

Liam Dawson is the ninth number eight to make a fifty on debut for England, but the other eight didn't get to 60.

    Dawson 50, Broad 10

Stuart Broad has an important job to do here. If he can hang around, maybe landing the odd lusty blow, England could get 470-plus. Here he does well to guide the pacey Umesh to third man for four. There are 10 minutes or so to go until tea.

  12. Australia send Pakistan in under the lightspublished at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

Australia have declared on 202-5 in the day-night Test in Brisbane, leaving Pakistan more than two days (217 overs in fact) to score a theoretical 490 to win.

Having been sent in to bat under the lights with 37 overs left today, they're 17-0 in the fourth.

Dawson has played very well, I talked about the placid pitch but that's not his fault he looks to have a good defence which is not like all tailenders, He hasn't needed luck, he has quality footwork, he looks really well organised with a good sound technique.

Very well batted, Liam Dawson. The Hampshire man goes to a half-century on debut with a punch down the ground off Ashwin. A blow to the lid second ball woke him up and since them he has been a picture of composure. Along with Rashid, he has stopped England from slipping off a cliff.

    Dawson 49, Broad 1

Broad is certainly expecting one up him, his feet are nowhere as an Umesh yorker flashes past the stumps. When Umesh does go short, Broad rides the bounce. Looking again at the Rashid wicket, it was perhaps a a little fuller in length than I first thought, with the batsman driving without moving his feet.

I'm pleased for the fast bowler because he has run up and tried to bowl as fast as he can on a pitch that has given no help whatsoever and stayed really fit when others haven't. Every time the captain has asked him to bowl he has given it everything, which shows he has a big heart.

Oh, Adil. It was going so well, but Rashid has played one shot too many. Pace from Umesh Yadav, back of a length, a flash taking the edge of the bat and going through to the gloves of Parthiv Patel. Supporters wake from their slumber, Rashid stomps off at the end of a valuable stand of 108. It could have been even better, mind.
