However, wherever I’m needed in the team I’ll bat. I was batting at five at the start of the tour but now I’m batting in four. It’s a good place to bat but I’d rather bat five.”

Liam Dawson can bat as well as any of our late-order all-rounders can. He plays close to his pad, the bat is close to the body - I know he wasn't really tested because of the slowness of the pitch, but I can only give him credit for the way he batted.  He got hit on the head, but carried on, and he and Rashid played splendidly.

Moeen Ali tells Sky Sports about being caught in the deep: “It wasn’t an easy wicket to bat on but with regards to my dismissal I thought to take it on was the best option. But I’m pleased to get the team out of a bit of a hole that we were in.”

It's an odd word, but a compulsive hooker like Moeen is dangerous. The other countries will watch this, prepare for him and just create quicker pitches like Australia. He was a bit scratchy to start with, but he didn't get out and had the strength of character to go on after lunch and bat superbly.

The bowlers didn't have much chance of getting anyone out today. The spin has been predictably slow so there's no margin for error. We know why, because of the cyclone, but we saw Ashwin - who's been the best bowler in the series - try his normal variations, then he started just tossing it up like benefit bowling, and Moeen accepted it. You haven't seen him bowling anything like that in this series. India didn't do anything wrong, the pitch has just defeated them.

It will be hard work for England's spinners tomorrow as Rahul and Patel have gathered their runs rather easily. It looks a good batting surface, there are no bargain offers out there - it's difficult to see how you'd get 10 wickets out there, let alone 20.

Stuart Sams: Geoffrey being very constructive with assessment of Stokes, but the truth is England's bowling lacks potency all round.  

Chris Harvey: For me two evenly matched sides, the best two in the world. 3-0 is a reflection of home advantage, expect a reverse in England.

The crowd begins to file out, they can come back tomorrow to marvel at spider cam and will be wondering how many runs their star studded batting line-up can amass. If Kohli gets in, and it might take a while for two wickets to fall, he has 640 runs in the series, he is 53 runs away from recording his best ever return and he could become only the second man to post 700 runs in a Test series for India. For those of you who are going to play against Liam Dawson, mark this - he bowls left-arm spin, but throws with his right hand. Like Samit Patel. It's a bit of an oddity.

And it's Liam Dawson who gets his first over in Test cricket. It will only be one, because it is the penultimate one of the day, He has a slip and a silly point. Not a classical action for the slow left-armer, rather low and crouching, although nowhere near the Paul Adams frog in a blender bracket, but he spins one sharply past Rahul's outside edge and it is an impressive start to go with a highly accomplished unbeaten 66 with the bat.

There are four other players who have similarly each of the three formats in their first three international appearances - Kyle Abbott (SA), Daniel Flynn (NZ), Joe Root and Ajmal Shahzad.
