    Rahul c Buttler b Rashid 199 (Ind 372-4)

Oh the poor, poor lad as Eddie Waring said. The crowd were on tenterhooks, sensing a maiden double century. It was a loopy over pitched one from Rashid well wide of off stump, barely pitching on the cut strip, Rahul lurched towards his 311th delivery but toe-ended it to square cover and he is so disconsolate he can barely tear himself off the field. The end of a superb innings.

It's thudded into his front pad and it's not far from being a good lbw shout... but two greens and a red.

  3. Not out - Karun on 69published at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

It was an attempted reverse sweep from Karun, who executed one perfectly to the boundary earlier in the over. He is struck outside the line and it was missing leg stump. It was also not off the bat or glove so Karun remains.

We're going to have our first review of the day. England are not sure whether it is lbw or a catch off Moeen but they are going to ask for something.

You've got to keep sharp and keep changing the bowling. Apart from the dropped catch, the fielding has been pretty good but I don't like it when it gets soporific, it's the same bowler and they're just taking runs. Rahul is thinking if these two stay on, he'll get his double ton - why can't they keep making him work for runs?

    Rahul 194, Karun 65

The debutant "Dawsy boy" as Jonny has decided upon, has bowled more than any other England bowler and he deserves a wicket, but these two batsmen don't look inclined to give anything away as they both collect singles.

A tired one from Moeen drifts down the leg side and Karun gets the bottom of the bat on it for four more, then, despite his undoubted fatigue, he is fleet of foot with an emphatic drive down the ground for his third six. He's on 193 now and it's the highest score by an India opener against England.

It's going to take India until lunchtime tomorrow to get level, at least. If they get a 150-170 lead, they could make it a little tricky for England. But it shouldn't be tricky on this pitch.

Dawson again, just the single conceded. The thickset new Yorkshire captain Gary Ballance in hi-vis tabard does not attempt to disguise a yawn as he watches on from the England dressing room. There are 11 overs left, Gary.

Rahul understandably looks shattered as he races through for a quick single, he's faced almost 300 balls now and his white shirt is almost latte coloured with various substances. Karun chips one back to Moeen but it drops agonisingly short of the diving England all-rounder. The crowd shrieks approval of the Indian 350.

When you talk about slow over-rates, more counties than Yorkshire did it, but two wrongs don't make a right. If someone robs a bank and gets away with it, it doesn't make it right if you rob a bank and get caught!

That's why they brought in the rule that you had to bowl 20 overs in the last hour, though it's 15 now.

    Dawson 0-69 from 21

A lady in a Superman T-shirt looks embarrassed to see herself on camera but the crowd are a little subdued, their fascination with spider cam seemingly on the wane. Dawson has the sort of low, crabby action that makes me wince as a perennial back pain sufferer but he's accurate, only conceding two fours in his 21 overs, plus those two sixes from Rahul of course. Comfortable singles for the batsmen again.

Whenever I see a slow over-rate, I think back to how Brian Close lost the England captaincy for a slow over-rate in a county game at Edgbaston.

(Andrew Sampson reminds Geoffrey how Close was censured by the TCCB for reducing the Yorkshire over-rate to around 14 overs an hour, at a time when 17-18 was the norm)

Fourteen? That'd be rapid compared to today!

After Stokes mischievously attempts to hit the spider cam as it winds it way over the stumps, Moeen resumes the attack, shirt sleeves neatly buttoned down and his white towel sticking out of the back of his trousers in similarly pristine condition. Singles for both batsmen, floodlights beginning to shine more prominently now and England's lead being steadily whittled down.

More from Graham Gooch on BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek, about his protege Alastair Cook's future as captain:

“He's 32? He’s a spring chicken… I hope he does continue but it’s a personal decision whether you still have the hunger and think you have something to offer. Joe Root can get more experience and his time will come.

"Alastair is strong mentally and he will know when the time is right. He’s right in the middle of his best years as a batsman and he’s got plenty of years left to score runs and influence the team.”

    Rahul 178, Karun 58

Rahul is beaten in the flight by Dawson and steers one narrowly out of the reach of the diving Root at short cover. Karun then edges one short of slip. No luck for the debutant, whose whites are going to need a bit more than the 30 degree economy wash.

If you're an occasional bowler, you shouldn't bowl like a bowler. Lob them up like pies, that's why batsmen will get out. Two overs, a bit of flighted filth, the eyes go wide and anything can happen.

Moeen returns and he tries from round the wicket to the right-handed Karun, with a slip and leg slip waiting hopefully. Rahul has time to turn one into the leg side for two more. The admirable Bairstow continues to exhort from the behind the bails, like a defiant wood pigeon. The role of gloveman is a bit like being a politician at times. You feel compelled to say things you know are unlikely to happen.
