The new ball experiment has not been a success so Dawson is called upon again. But it's still Blankety Blank in the wickets column for the Hampshire slow left-armer as Rahul tickles a deft leg glance for his 14th four.

If India are still batting about teatime tomorrow, they'll be about 50 ahead and that will put pressure on England in the second innings.

Karun, in third third Test, completes his maiden fifty in some style by driving Ball down the ground to the long-on boundary. It has come from 98 balls and it follows the wickets of Pujara and Kohli in the teens in the space of 10 overs, which on this tour is the equivalent of ousting the top six.

Over-rates is the one thing where the authorities really need to get a grasp. It's been sluggish again today, there's just under 40 minutes until the scheduled close [11:00 GMT] and there are still 19 overs to bowl, though they get the extra half-hour.

  5. Free entry to the Gabba tomorrowpublished at 10:21 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

There's an hour left of play on day four of the day-night Test in Brisbane - and Pakistan are 271-6 chasing a theoretical 490 to win.

Cricket Australia has announced that entry to the Gabba will be free tomorrow if the game goes to a fifth day.

The vast, somewhat old-fashioned, floodlight pylons are in operation, even though the sun continues to shine. Not all the bulbs are actually illuminated and the ones that are have created a rather unfortunate phallic shape. Just the single in the Broad over, but disturbingly there are still 19 left in the day.

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former England captain Graham Gooch has been speaking on BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek about England's Test series loss:

"Sadly, in the first Test we competed really well and I thought we were going to make more of a fight of it than I thought initially. But we’ve been outmanoeuvred, outfought and outgunned in Indian conditions.

"A lot of our young players will be better for the experience, but you need a specific gameplan for those conditions and the disappointing thing is we won the toss a few times and built platforms to do well but then fell away, let India back in and they drilled us.

"We’ve a lot of exciting players – both with the ball and the bat - but they’ve got to mature into a consistent unit. This was always going to be a tough tour – logistically as much as anything else."

I thought Rahul was going to retire hurt last night after over exerting himself attempting a square cut, but he has stayed put all day out there in the heat. There is a slip, a gully and a short cover for Ball. He's accurate, but there is no luck for him again as one takes the shoulder of the bat and runs safely away for another boundary.

There's a lot of effort going on out there, but not much reward. The challenge if you're out there is not to contemplate Chennai airport on 21 December, but to stick to the task in hand. It is the most unforgiving pitch for bowlers.

As has been the theme for England throughout the series, whenever there is a glimmer of hope, and Pujara and Kohli out cheaply was certainly that, there is a recovery, and the century partnership is recorded from 161 balls. Ball has a slip and a gully waiting for another edge but there is nothing on offer as injured England opener Haseeb Hameed, in a fetching gingham shirt, watches on from the stands alongside his father.

The only change this new ball has made is in the speed with which it is travelling to the boundary. Rahul gets a thick edge to Broad and it flies away safely to the boundary to ensure the opener's highest Test score.

It came quickly, it's as if Cook was still conditioned to the old ball, and was standing a little bit closer so was surprised by the pace it came at.

Jake Ball has bowled well, but he only has one wicket in the series.

No luck for Ball with the new nut. It was wide, Karun had a dart at it, Cook got his right hand to it at first slip but it didn't stick and it went away for four, Ball no doubt feeling unable to vent his true feelings as it is the captain, who takes himself out of the slip cordon after the blemish.

I have heard the reason the local authorities have not allowed those stands to be used is that the stand has encroached on the area needed by the fire tenders to come in, in case of emergency.

The effective seating capacity is now down to about 25,000-26,000. We had about 16,000 in here yesterday, and probably a couple of thousand more today.

It is indeed the new cherry, always a wonderful looking object, like opening a new bar of chocolate or a new packet of golf balls. But this is far from an English green seamer in April, and there is no discernible difference in Broad's over.

Dawson, left-arm over like the old King of Spain himself, AF Giles. Precisely no men around the bat now, they'll have Bairstow on the boundary soon. Is this umpire coming out with a new ball?
