Re: 9.21 - Give us a break, Jamie. Broad is (hopefully) not reading, but we other Forest fans have enough gloom from the cricket and don't need salt in the wounds by being reminded of the football.

Ind 630-6published at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Karun 226, Jadeja 3

The runs continue to flow, Karun arches his back as Broad tries the short one and gives it the upper cut all the way for six. The unusual deep first slip we saw earlier was not there just for the purpose but is back in the stable after the horse has departed.

He went at it one-handed, I think he could have gone with two. Broad has a new ball in hand, which should bounce for a few overs.

  4. dropped catch

Dropped catch - Karun on 217published at 09:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Ind 620-6 (143 ahead)

Root is the latest man to spill a chance at first slip, diving one handed to his right but it doesn't stick. Karun has been dropped twice at first slip off Jake Ball, 183 runs between the two chances.

In isolation, that was a brilliant bit of cricket, a stupendous reflex catch of which Benaud or Stokes would have been proud. Buttler may have his imperfections as a wicketkeeper, but he's an excellent fielder.

  6. wicket

    Ashwin c Buttler b Broad 67 (Ind 616-6)

Fantastic catch from Buttler, diving low to his left at backward point. Muted celebrations from Broad, a punch of the air but little else, which rather sums up the situation, which is that India lead by 139. "Still they come" says Stephan, still world weary, in reference to the arrival of Ravi Jadeja.

This is a record sixth-wicket partnership on this ground, beating Gavaskar and Shastri against West Indies in 1983.

  8. Ind 614-5published at 170 overs

    lead by 137

All the shots are coming out now, Jake Ball shares the new cherry and tries a bouncer, which is hit like a tennis overhead smash by Karun to the long-on boundary, and three more follow to the same area off the next ball as the stand extends to 179. A declaration looming?

Surely the blame is not on our spinners. They get a few overs, every game on our pitches at home, if they are lucky. More turning wickets should be mandatory.

  11. new ball

New ballpublished at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Ind 606-5

The third new ball is belatedly taken by Broad, with five fielders on the boundary and only one slip. There are no three star jumps at the start of the spell from the big seamer. He's not got much left in the tank it would seem and he's not going to have much of a let-up when he gets home, he's a Nottingham Forest fan. But some impressive carry at 86mph, Bairstow is unable to take it way above his head. Here's a novel field placing, Joe Root is almost directly behind Bairstow on the boundary, a deep first slip?

  12. Ind 600-5published at 09:15 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Karun 207, Ashwin 60

Moeen will be bringing up a double century of his own at this rate, he's gone for nearly 150. Another wretched long hop is punched off the back foot by Karun for another boundary and India soon reach 600 for the second innings in succession.

Nair is the third Indian to score a double hundred at number five. MS Dhoni and VVS Laxman are the others. He's also the third Indian to convert maiden Test hundred into a double.

And Jennings continues, but the part-time seamer is driven to the boundary by Karun to complete a double century in 306 balls with his 23rd four. A hug from the imposing figure of Ashwin and the jubilant batsman kisses the India badge on his lid.

It looks like Jos Buttler has the [short-leg] helmet, because Jennings is going to have to concentrate on his bowling!

  17. Ind 585-5published at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    108 ahead

The first ball of the evening session is rather indicative of England's mood, a slow, tired long hop down the leg side from Moeen but it only goes for a single. The 150 partnership is recorded and it has come from 252 balls

Anyone else like to see Buttler bat at four when England bat next innings? Moeen batted most of our innings and has bowled 30+ overs. Buttler was six not out in the last match 2nd innings playing as a specialist batsman, while Moeen was out cheaply looking shattered.

That's not our former colleague Julian Shea of Surbiton is it? The Sheaman would be getting the Roast Beef joke out today because it is another pea-souper in Salford.

Want to see how Karun has scored his 195 runs? of course you can, and it's not even Christmas yet. A few presents handed to him by the bowlers but some solid strokeplay, and he's been strong square of the wicket again today.
