If you're batting for a draw on this surface, with men round the bat, there's actually a very good chance for you to score runs. You can bat in isolation, not fret about the scoreboard, and you can get a few runs in the bank which will help you when they're picking the team for the next Test [in July].

If you're a captain out in the field here, you take the surface into account. There's no point in having three slips and a gully and saying "look how attacking we are", when the ball isn't going to find the edge.

Everyone talks about the team, but for the batsmen, this is the chance to bat for five or six hours in turning conditions which will set you up very well for your own individual career. Cook has done this many times, but for any of the others, the next time they come to the subcontinent they'll have been here and done it.

I've got a gadget and I'm not afraid to use it. Karun Nair, in only his third Test match, has 71 and has been very strong square of the wicket. Usual opener Murali Vijay, moved down the order because of injury, is on 17. Will they crack on and put England under pressure or will the tourists rip through the tail and get a first innings lead for the first time since the drawn first Test. We shall find out.

What would be your starting tactics for England this morning?

I'd go seam and spin. Rashid and Stokes - Stokes has only bowled about nine overs, so they are looking after him, although there's nothing for him after this game until the one-dayers [in January]. Rashid is your likeliest wicket-taker, although he'll go for runs.

A good spinner landing lots of balls in the rough could be tough. England could be up against it if India get this lead today. Once India go past England, assuming they do, I think they will score very quickly. It could be a very tough day.

What an innings it was from KL Rahul, who was denied a maiden Test double century when he dragged a wide one to square cover and almost had to be helped back to the pavilion such was his level of despair.

I think this pitch will turn and England are really up against it, with India very much in the box seat.

  9. Pakistan close in on record winpublished at 03:49 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

On the final day of the day-night Test in Brisbane, Pakistan need just 58 more to break the new world record for the highest Test chase. Set 490 to beat Australia, they have recovered from 220-6 and got to 432-8, with Asad Shafiq unbeaten on 127.

England posted 477 but such has been the pattern of the series, with India 3-0 ahead, I have already brought up the 'highest first innings scores when losing a match' page, nothing like a bit of Monday morning optimism is there? The answer, by the way, is Australia's 586 against England at Sydney in 1894. Remarkably there have been 12 scores over 500.
