I think there should be 45 seconds between overs and if you haven't started your run up by then there should be a run penalty. The other thing is drinks breaks, there are too many of them. The TV people won't sympathise because they want their breaks.

England are in retreat. This is the Test cricket equivalent of parking the bus. There's a slip in place for Liam Dawson, while the rest of the fielders are in a different post code. I'm seeing a replay of the previous over, where it's suggested that Karun Nair got a tickle on a reverse sweep that ended in Bairstow's gloves. It was only the smallest of sounds and England have no further reviews.

  3. Australia unchangedpublished at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

Australia have named an unchanged squad for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan. The XI which squeaked past Pakistan in Brisbane this morning are joined again by uncapped bowler Chadd Sayers, who was 12th man in the first Test.

India proceeding quite serenely towards a big lead and Karun Nair looking to beat his teammate Rahul to achieve a double century.

I haven't seen Alastair Cook reappear yet. Joe Root might want him back soon, as the VC is looking vexed when Adil Rashid twice loses his line to be biffed through the leg side by Nair. Time for drinks. England would like a brandy.

Navneet Gautam: What are the odds of Karun Nair also going out on 199?

Dawson continues under the burning sun, all blue shades and big blond hair. There's turn and bounce, which is probably a better sight for Ravi Ashwin that it is for the tourists. That doesn't stop Jonny Bairstow from getting excited, though. At the moment, the Test continues, but the contest is on hold until England bat.

Richard, Sheffield: Is this a looming scenario for cricket?: the Hawkeye, Hotspot and Snicko technology starts working so quickly that every ball bowled is automatically "reviewed" in the space of a few seconds, and when a wicket is detected a signal goes to the on field umpire who raises the finger, with no need for either side to review again.

With Cook off the field, Joe Root stands in, looking very at home in the role, it has to be said. Much arm-pointing as a field is set for Rashid, who then does well to bowl to a packed off side. Ashwin, leaving, flapping, then defending, is kept quiet for six deliveries.

Phil, Manchester: If I was the Indian captain, I'd declare right now - the pitch doesn't seem to contain the amount of gremlins as seen in other tracks.

Harun Mohamed: Why don't India declare now? Be imaginative Virat, you are winning 3-0, bowl at a tired England, force a result, nothing to lose.

England return to Liam Dawson, the left-arm spinner who bowled throughout the morning session. The debutant is yet to have the number of his cap stitched underneath the badge on his shirt. He might be the third spinner, but he's certainly been the most dependable. Tidy over, four from it. At the end of it, Alastair Cook trots off the field. I thought the captain was last off a sinking ship?

There is only one other Indian who has scored 150 against England batting at five or lower and that was Mohammad Azharuddin, who did it twice.

    Nair 152, Ashwin 35

You can't help but feel that England have got it the wrong way round today. When they wanted wickets this morning, they opted for the containment of Dawson (who bowled well). Now that plan hasn't worked, they are using the more attacking, but naturally more expensive Rashid. With just over an hour to go before tea, it's a decent bet that India will have 600 by then.

India will try to score quickly but they don't want to take too many risks because they don't want to bat in the second innings. If they can get another 100 runs they could think about getting England to bat for the last 40 minutes of the day.

India have scored at 4.7 an over for the past 10. There are 52 remaining in the day. If they bat for another 30 they will be about 180 ahead with 20 to bowl at England tonight. Alarm bells now ringing for everyone connected with the England side. Ashwin goes back and forces a Moeen short ball off his hips for four. India are inflicting death by a thousand cuts, England have now way to stop the bleeding.

It has been a real, real good innings. I know this is a good pitch to bat on but when he hasn't made runs in the previous two Test matches he would have felt the pressure.

    Ind 509-5

Karun Nair has grown into this knock and has now made his maiden Test ton into a biggie. Not always convincing, this has been an eye-catching third fifty, with some particularly sparkling strokes since the interval. He has a first-class best of 328, by the way. Adil Rashid is getting a bowl too.

I think they'll play pretty naturally until tea and then look to accelerate. I get the feeling India will want at least 10 overs at England.

Moeen comes round the wicket, winkling a leading edge out of Ashwin, only for the ball to fall short of Alastair Cook at mid-on. Nair, looking a completely different player post-lunch, dances to drive down the ground for four. You might want to don some sort of protection, because this could get very messy, very quickly. The crowd is excited, Karun has reached 149.

We are dependent on the quality of cricket to a great degree on the state of the 22 yards between the stumps. It's taken the bowlers out of the game which is not what we want.
