The Jonny Bairstow hundred in Cape Town was so emotional, but his partnership with Stokes was brutal. They destroyed the South Africa attack. Even my wife was moved by it. In our hotel, there was a young boy playing in the corridor, and his dad said hello to me. My wife asked who it was. It was Stokes himself.

I've got a renewal, a renaissance and an arrival. The renewal is England's one-day cricket, particularly that game at Trent Bridge - it's been a remarkable journey.

The renaissance - we forget that there are far too few cricketing nations. Every other sport has grown, football is a global game while cricket is a small club. This year, we saw Pakistan come back, under the power of Misbah-ul-Haq's leadership. They were a united, hard-working, dedicated touring party, and Misbah managed to keep a lid on all those tensions, such as the return of Mohammad Amir.

The arrival - I found myself very moved watching Mehedi Hasan of Bangladesh against England. A lovely moment as you always want to see new actors taking to the stage in any sport.

England's defeat in Bangladesh where 100 for no wicket becomes 164 all out in Dhaka. It might be Middlesex's win in the Championship, I thought it was wonderful the way a county finale captured the imagination of stacks of people.

I've got an authoritative list, a lot of the stuff I wasn't there for, I missed Ben Stokes in South Africa but to give you my brief short list which is framed by losses. Brathwaite's assault on Stokes in the World T20 was memorable.

England have kept India under control, but India are under control of the match. India might be less conservative this afternoon. There are dodgy times ahead for England, because India will get a substantial lead.

I wouldn't say that was the memorable session of Test cricket I've ever watched. Nair got his first Test hundred and Dawson his first wicket. He has bowled steadily.

We'll have time for one more over and it is something of a token first one of the day for England's mercurial Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who always gives the impression that he should have more than the 38 Test wickets he has. Stylish stroke from Karun and it brings him an 11th four. A slow 27-over session, but Dawson has bowled impressively unchanged, 1-31 from 13.

Another one keeps low from Dawson but Ashwin jabs down on it as if prodding suspiciously at a scurrying mouse and gets enough bat, the manufacturer of which is the same name as M People were searching inside themselves for, to bring his first boundary.

Stokes again and Karun looks a little out of sorts for a man who has just made a century, with only three runs in the last six overs.

A rare full toss from Dawson, who has been hit for more sixes (three) than fours, but there is no run as Ashwin finds the fielder, though the India spinner denies his England counterpart a maiden by taking a quick single from the final ball of the over.

It's been quite a soporific session. The highlight was Dawson getting his first Test wicket. England haven't bowled their overs very quickly and India keep plodding on.

  14. Ind 451-5published at 05:50 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Stokes 1-62 from 16

Stokes almost provides the breakthrough as Karun chips one off the leading edge but it falls short of mid-off and the England all-rounder raises his heavily tattooed arms over his head in anguish.

Nair isn't batting with the confidence of a man who has got his first Test hundred.

  17. Ind 449-5published at 130 overs

    Karun 116, Ashwin 1

Dawson completes his 34th over, still just the three bowlers used this morning. Not much threat to the batsmen but just the two singles conceded.

    30 behind

Like Broad before him, Stokes is up at 87mph. England are giving it everything, albeit with not a very rapid over-rate, and a rare maiden, only the fourth of the morning, if my scour of the scorecard is correct.

The inside-edge didn't seem to change the passage of the ball too greatly. It may not be saying a great deal, but Dawson has bowled the best left-arm spin we've seen from England on the tour.

  20. Ind 447-5published at 05:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Karun 115, Ashwin 0

Dawson has bowled unchanged this morning with impressive persistence and he could have had a second wicket there, Ashwin off the back foot and Bairstow cannot get his gloves to it. The arms go up and it looked to have been a deflection but there was no squiggle on the ultra edge.
