Alastair Cook certainly looked stunned by that performance and there will be continued speculation about what he will decide to do. I wonder what Joe Root makes of it as the captain-elect. The next cricket for the England team is next month for the one-day internationals and Eoin Morgan will be in the hotseat as captain for that.

There will be a live text on 15 January for the first ODI in Pune so join the team for that, but for now we wish you all a very happy Christmas and New Year. Cheerio now.

So England made 477 and lost by an innings, that is the highest score by any side suffering that fate.

For me, Root should always be at four - I disagree with Trevor Bayliss. We need another batsman at five, all the business with playing Moeen there or the wicketkeeper is rubbish. We need five proper batsmen there, that's what India have done. They've made big runs and batted England out of the game. Their seamers shouldn't be better than ours, their spinners are going to be better, but today we just gave up with stupid attacking shots.

More from assistant coach Paul Farbrace on whether Alastair Cook should stay as captain: "The respect he has in the team speaks volumes for him as a bloke and a captain. Probably he will need a few days but Cooky will do what is right for the England team as he always has done. We hope he continues but ultimately it is his decision.

Should eight defeats in a year take that decision out of his hands?

"We're working towards the Ashes and nothing has happened on this tour in terms of him being the right man to be captain. He is a very popular leader and everyone follows what he wants."

More from England assistant coach Paul Farbrace: "When we say about this positive talk, it's not just running down the wicket and playing with gay abandon, and the players know that.

"They are very clear about what that means but it has led people to say we have been reckless and we are not.

"They will all be better players for this series but unfortunately at the moment it hurts. Everyone has shown glimpses, but glimpses don't win you Test matches."

  9. Postpublished at 11:14 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

England assistant coach Paul Farbrace on Sky Sports: "Today was a day we could have batted the day out and we just weren't good enough.

"It has been a series of missed opportunities, missed chances in the field and too often we have lost wickets in bundles. You can't do that against a team like this.

"We played some really good cricket but you can't play for just a few sessions in a Test match."

  11. Time for Root to lead?published at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

Would it be good for Joe Root to take over, or is it too early for him?

There's many a player who got the captaincy when it was young - Ted Dexter, Peter May. Some people thrive on it. Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain weren't county captains, and they did well. People either rise to the challenge or they don't.

"Andrew Strauss has to make a decision, that's what he's paid for. What about the chairman Colin Graves, and the chief executive? They run the business, but the performance out here has been pathetic"

  12. Will Cook resign?published at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

More from Alastair Cook, including the big question: "I can't fault the application or effort and we stuck together as a group but we didn't get big hundreds.

[Has the team stagnated in the last 12 months?] "That's a fair shout.

[Are you still the right man for the job?] "This is not the place to be asking me these questions. I've got to go home and do some thinking and without the emotive side of what's happened over the last nine weeks."

  13. Postpublished at 11:06 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

What did you make of Cook today? You've written that this should be the end for him as captain? What impact will that have on him carrying on?

I wrote my stuff yesterday before we lost. He made a comment before the tour about how it might be his last. After we've lost the series, he says Joe Root is ready for captaincy, and nobody forced that out of him. So this must have been on his mind for some time. It hasn't just suddenly happened.

Whoever captains in England this summer has seven Tests before the biggest series of all in the Ashes. If we are to have a new captain, he needs all seven Tests to get his feet under the table, we don't want Alastair giving it up after three or four Tests.

  14. 'We just weren't good enough'published at 11:05 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

More from Alastair Cook: "I don't think we ran out of fight. All the guys gave their all, we just weren't good enough. Whether it was the pressure or mental tiredness but I said at the start of the tour it was vitally important we stayed in the contest because we've seen on previous tours once they get ahead it's hard to come back.

"We've struggled to take 20 wickets and we haven't got enough runs so we probably didn't deserve it. We have had opportunities but haven't been good enough to take them."

  15. Man of the seriespublished at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

What has been the biggest positive you've taken?

More from man of the series Virat Kohli: "Every time we are put under the pump in the past few series, we have made mistakes and lost wickets at crucial times, such as after intervals, but getting 200+ three times with the lower order speaks volumes. Our pace bowlers were better than theirs and that makes me very proud as an Indian captain."

  16. Postpublished at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

Kohli takes the elegant silver trophy and his team pose for the jubilant photographs you will see very shortly. England had won the last three series between the teams and had a 4-0 of their own on home soil in 2011 but this has been a very different story.

  17. Man of the seriespublished at 10:58 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

Man of the series Virat Kohli, who made 655 runs: "Especially after winning the series and coming here, it's evidence of the character we possess in the side, the way they batted and bowled.

"We wanted the youngsters to step up, KL almost got a double century and Karun got a 300, they made sure there was only one winner in the game.

"It's always tricky when you've scored 477 and you concede a lead of 281, so we understood what would happen to England if we got a couple of wickets. The intensity was top class."

  19. Captain's viewpublished at 10:56 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

England captain Alastair Cook: "We've dropped vital chances and India keep punishing us. It's been a series of missed opportunities - not being able to score enough runs and take enough wickets. We tried as hard as we can, but it wasn't good enough."

  20. Captain's viewpublished at 10:54 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

England captain Alastair Cook: "No excuses. India were the better team and they deserved to win. It was a very good fifth day wicket. Out of the rough it turned but we got ourselves in a good position and weren't good enough. Credit to Virat, they've outplayed us. It's a hard thing for us to say, you're desperate to prove you are better than the opposition."
