Alastair Cook certainly looked stunned by that performance and there will be continued speculation about what he will decide to do. I wonder what Joe Root makes of it as the captain-elect. The next cricket for the England team is next month for the one-day internationals and Eoin Morgan will be in the hotseat as captain for that.

For me, Root should always be at four - I disagree with Trevor Bayliss. We need another batsman at five, all the business with playing Moeen there or the wicketkeeper is rubbish. We need five proper batsmen there, that's what India have done. They've made big runs and batted England out of the game. Their seamers shouldn't be better than ours, their spinners are going to be better, but today we just gave up with stupid attacking shots.

Would it be good for Joe Root to take over, or is it too early for him?

There's many a player who got the captaincy when it was young - Ted Dexter, Peter May. Some people thrive on it. Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain weren't county captains, and they did well. People either rise to the challenge or they don't.

"Andrew Strauss has to make a decision, that's what he's paid for. What about the chairman Colin Graves, and the chief executive? They run the business, but the performance out here has been pathetic"

What did you make of Cook today? You've written that this should be the end for him as captain? What impact will that have on him carrying on?

I wrote my stuff yesterday before we lost. He made a comment before the tour about how it might be his last. After we've lost the series, he says Joe Root is ready for captaincy, and nobody forced that out of him. So this must have been on his mind for some time. It hasn't just suddenly happened.

Whoever captains in England this summer has seven Tests before the biggest series of all in the Ashes. If we are to have a new captain, he needs all seven Tests to get his feet under the table, we don't want Alastair giving it up after three or four Tests.

More from Alastair Cook: "I don't think we ran out of fight. All the guys gave their all, we just weren't good enough. Whether it was the pressure or mental tiredness but I said at the start of the tour it was vitally important we stayed in the contest because we've seen on previous tours once they get ahead it's hard to come back.

"We've struggled to take 20 wickets and we haven't got enough runs so we probably didn't deserve it. We have had opportunities but haven't been good enough to take them."

"It's always tricky when you've scored 477 and you concede a lead of 281, so we understood what would happen to England if we got a couple of wickets. The intensity was top class."
