    Stokes c Karun b Jadeja 23 (Eng 193-6)

It is six down now. Stokes, who can hit them out of the park with ease, has steered it in stifled fashion straight to mid wicket. We could get that early finish after all, for very different reasons.

Ian Davies: Stokes cannot bat (yet) in the subcontinent. Geoffrey Boycott as usual is right. We cannot defend.

Simon George: How effective with bat and ball has Stokes been this winter? He seems to have been nullified by these teams.

    Stokes 23, Buttler 0

There might well have been an edge on that one from Buttler in the previous over, a little squiggle appeared on the ultra edge, so it could have been six down. The attacking batsman looks ok against Mishra but is still to get off the mark.

Moeen's a wonderful batsman, but he seems completely unadaptable. And even Mishra's probably surprised he's still bowling now and not Ashwin.

Buttler is the new man. was there an edge on this one? It's not important because Pujara could not cling on to it diving backwards.

Absolutely brainless. Simple as that. They just don't learn. They're better than this - they've got through half-an-hour, but they're frightened to death of defending because they're rubbish at it. They have no idea how to play the turning ball. Coaches and directors of cricket get paid fortunes for this.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 71.2 overs

    Moeen c Ashwin b Jadeja 44 (Eng 192-5)

He's hit the ball to him instead. Moeen has done it a few times now. He made a century in the first innings of course but he has had a slog at Jadeja and it has gone straight to mid-on. Not much chance of calling it a day with an hour left now.

It's ridiculous that Ashwin hasn't bowled since tea. Crazy.

  9. Eng 192-4published at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

Moeen is more in control of the sweep against Mishra and collects another single. He would surely be expecting to face an Ashwin-Jadeja combination.

I don't think our batsmen have confidence that their defence is sound enough to stay in. I think they want to put the pressure back on the bowlers by attacking - and that's not the right way to play.

  11. Eng 191-4published at 70 overs

    Moeen 43, Stokes 22

Less of that please Moeen. It's hesitant against Jadeja, it comes off bat and pad and loops up towards short leg, but the fielder is slow to react and cannot get there. Stokes then has a wild lunge at one that misses everything and goes away for four byes, but England are still 91 behind and a long way from the safety of India having to bat.

When Geoff Boycott gets a cold, his nose isn't runny, it's just blocked. When one of England's top order get a cold, you can guarantee they'll all go down with it in quick succession...

Mishra again, slip, leg slip and short leg. He tempts Stokes with a loopy one outside off stump and a confident stroke down the ground brings the left-hander his fourth four, to virtual silence from the home crowd.

That's the beauty of having neutral umpires. All teams used to think they were badly done by, with home umpires. These days, even if they get it wrong, you know it's an honest mistake.

  15. Eng 181-4published at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

    101 behind

Stokes collects four but it was an agricultural heave against the spin of Jadeja and it was far from in the middle of the bat. Plenty of appealing from the home team but nothing close in this session yet.

I'm all for Jadeja bowling, but Ashwin has got Stokes out five times! We'd look for that, wouldn't we?!

A Mishra maiden and we look at minimum number of overs left column anxiously, like a man glancing anxiously at his watch at a train station waiting for his date to arrive.

'Can England win?' asks Ben in Surrey (08:48). My son is an optimist, named Ben and he lives in Surrey. But not even he would think that (and besides which he's in Australia on honeymoon)!

My seven-year-old son is an avid cricket player and fan. However I'm doubting his comedy credentials as he thinks Geoffrey Boycott is hilarious and deserving of his own show a la Michael McIntyre..

    Moeen 41, Stokes 14

Moeen flicks Jadeja into the leg side and collects three. It's just the thought of Jos Buttler in next. Wonderful player but maybe not ideal for these circumstances.

Four men crouching around the bat but Moeen still opts for the front front slog over mid-wicket and it brings him his fourth boundary.
