  1. Final hourpublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

The last hour is signalled by the sturdy figure of umpire Erasmus. A minimum of 15 overs or until 11:03 GMT. But to think, we could have been wrapping up by now and driving home for Christmas. How much more time will we need in terms of the match though?

If you turn up exhausted after a long touring season to a type of wicket you don't get where you play most what do you expect? May be a more fundamental look at the game is urgently needed rather than hammering already stressed players all the time.

    Peter, Glasgow

Folks I am fed up hearing that the team is tired - it's their career choice and they are supposed to be professional. If I said to my boss that I am sorry for the poor performance but I am tired I would be receiving my P45.

    Eng 205-8

Broad survives for now, missing off stump. Still two wickets intact. For now.

  4. Umpire reviewpublished at 10:01 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

Ashwin to Broad, who is your money on? No shot played and not out the decision, but India ask the question.

    Rashid c Jadeja b Umesh 2 (Eng 200-8)

India call for the new ball midway through the Umesh over and it pays dividends immediately as Rashid gets a leading edge to cover. Not much to excuse that shot. The radio line has disappeared as well, Kevin Howells has to step in from the Salford studio, he's under almost as much pressure as the England batsmen.

This ground has come to life. You can feel the kettle-lid shaking as the kettle boils.

Ashwin returns and there is plenty of spin in to the right-handed Rashid but, although it is precarious on occasions, he keeps it out.

Horatio McSherry: Sir Lord Geoffrey Boycott in scintillating form this morning. Nearly makes up for our wet flannels in the middle.

Rob Molloy: Geoffrey Boycott is spot on. Brainless cricket from England. I've seen enough, off to the cinema to watch Rogue One.

Chris Harvey: Absolutely sick of Boycott's 'block everything' agenda. We might bat out a few more draws, but no-one will be watching!

Rock solid from Rashid. He batted for four hours in Dubai once and there is no way through for Mishra as the Yorkshireman takes a single to keep the bowling. A mid-pitch chat with Buttler. 'Stay in' seems to be about the gist.

Dave: I can't help feeling that half England's issues come from playing too much. They've been on tour since October.

Matt Kelly: Why is everyone blaming Moeen all the time? He's scored nearly 200 runs in this match.

Des Hartley Russell: Where are Jimmy and Monty circa Cardiff 2009 when you need them...

  12. Eng 198-7published at 09:46 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

    Buttler 3, Rashid 1

They're racing through the overs. Rashid off the mark and Buttler, seeking to prove he is not just a blaster, keeps out the remainder of the Jadeja over with relative ease. Relative being the operative word in these circs.

Matt O: Aren't we supposed to have strength in depth batting?! More strength in my Grandma's knicker elastic.

Not sure we need that image Matt, but the comparison is perhaps apt.

Matt Collis: Gutless, again. I can already hear the lame excuses from Bayliss, Cook etc. A complete ignorance of overseas conditions

Seán Ranson: England: arguably the best team in the world on seaming pitches, Sunday League in the subcontinent.

  14. Eng 197-7published at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

Buttler keeps out a maiden against Mishra. Moeen with a rather vacant look in his eyes watching on from the dressing room. That shot of his after tea really was not a good idea.

England have been awful since tea, there's no other word for it. You can't just concede all attacking intent, but you've got to pick the right options and England haven't done that.

  16. Eng 197-7published at 09:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

Adil Rashid is the new man. He has a slip and a gully and two men breathing in his eyeline at silly point and short leg but he keeps out Jadeja this time. That minimum 19 overs left looks a little distant. And we are not likely to call it off with an hour to go if England are still batting.

Michael Blakey: Just the 300 runs difference between their number five yesterday and ours today then.

Rob Meech: Along with his inability to play the short ball, his disregard for a match situation is why Moeen isn't a top-six batsman.

Kharma Steve: This refusal to defend is a sign of utter cowardice... they dont have the guts to defend... shameless cowards.

    Dawson b Mishra 0 (Eng 196-7)

Debutant Dawson made an assured unbeaten 66 in the first innings but he has been beaten all ends up by a Mishra googly that has gone between bat and pad and into the timbers. The England players have that familiar haunted look in the pavilion.

It's like skittles, push one and they all go down. What the hell's going on out there? They'll go home to England, play on seaming and swinging pitches again, be a match for anyone in the world, make lots of money and the next time we come back to India or the UAE, exactly the same will happen again.
