What Alastair Cook feels about this and how it influences his decision about his future as captain I'm not sure.

Supporters knew this would be a tough series. England were undermanned and underpowered, but they would have wanted some fight today to not lose this match to show character, but I think fans will be upset by this and the manner of the defeat.

But Alastair Cook will have to face the music and the extremely loud MC Ravi Shastri because we are about to have the presentations. A lot of people thinking of going home for Christmas anxious about what he might say.

India extend their unbeaten run to 18 Tests and their triumphant players are being given a tumultuous reception as they take a lap around the outfield. England have lost six of their last eight Tests and they have headed for the pavilion.

That is a hiding - England losing 4-0 despite having won four tosses.

Alastair Cook is out there, leading his players to shake hands with the opposition. We thought it might be over by this time, we didn't expect it to have been like this though. It was 97-0 at lunch.

Of all the collapses we've seen, that is right up there in the pantheon. I'm going to point the finger at Moeen Ali, there was no need for him to play that shot. That could have ramifications for all sorts of things beyond this series.

There looked to have been a send-off there. Buttler got involved with Parthiv Patel, who was his team-mate at Mumbai Indians. In came Boutros-Boutros Erasmus, poor old Jake Ball has come in and he's got to bat out nine overs. Where's Graham Onions when you need him?

  9. wicket

    Broad c Pujara b Jadeja 1 (Eng 207-9)

One wicket from the end now. Broad prodding forward speculatively, it flies off the glove to leg slip. A little bit of animosity between the England batsmen and the fielders but the series is very nearly over and they will soon be going their separate ways.

Alex Hewitt: The best thing for English cricket would be for us to lose this Test. New captain, new selectors, new approach...

Tom Shaw: When we do lose this series, whether it be 3-0 or 4-0, wouldn't it be nice if we could refrain from embarking on an 'English Football-esque' witch-hunt? Can't we just accept that we haven't been good enough, let them learn and move forwards?

Jonathan Burton: India ARE actually quite good. Comments would suggest England had been rolled over inside 3 days by the combined universities.

Jadeja takes no more than two minutes to bowl an over and he is back to bowl to Broad, but some fairly confident defence from the big left-hander, whose Test highest of 169 was a while ago now.

India might want to keep one eye on the light if they want to keep bowling bouncers - they don't want to have to go off.

Something England will want to do is try to make sure there aren't any more than the minimum number of overs bowled.

Broad calls for some extra protective equipment so he is planning to be there for a while. He keeps out another Umesh over. No sign of captain Cook in the changing room and all manner of speculation about his future as captain. Don't be hasty Alastair, no need to do anything today, I think we should all just go home quietly and reflect.

It makes it worse when you see the chain reaction of wickets. That's why the good sides, when they get a wicket, turn the screw, give nothing away, the fielders come in and the batsmen feel like they're on hostile territory.

Ashwin, still wicketless in this innings, probes away to Buttler but he has it covered. I wonder if news has reached Trevor Bayliss? He should be back in Australia for his hernia op now and he may not want to come back

Umesh has two slips and a leg slip for Broad. It thuds into the big man's thigh but he survives for now.

It's not entirely unexpected. Essentially, they don't seem to have much left to give. You could go through all those wickets and analyse them. Dawson didn't pick the googly when he was trying to defend it, so it was a good piece of deception by the bowler, and in a way he's less culpable than anyone else. But you look at all the other deliveries and there was nothing devious about them.
