Ishant is persisting with the short one, banging it in halfway down the track on occasions. Cook has a swish and a miss at one down the leg side, there is a shriek from wicketkeeper Patel as he collects it, but no hint of an appeal and Cook keeps the bowling with a calm single to mid-on.

India has won the series, but there are areas of Kohli's captaincy that can improve. India are 250 ahead, yet he only has a slip and a silly point. Cook is a player who hits the ball in the air, so why not have a short leg?

    Jenning 16, Cook 12

Excitable shrieks from the players and the small crowd as Ravichandran's revolutions result in a tentative edge into the pad. It loops up, there is no short leg and wicketkeeper Patel cannot scramble round in time.

The more and more I watch Jennings, the more he looks like Marcus Trescothick. Very simple technique, economy of movement. Trescothick was a really good player. This kid looks very much like him.

No slip now for Ishant, but men on either side at short cover and short mid-wicket, around 10 yards from the bat, always a useful position in schoolboy cricket.

I think England are going about it the right way. You need good defence, but you have to look to score. Looking to score is different to attacking - that's why Root and Cook have done well in India.

Ashwin strays towards leg stump and Jennings sweeps purposefully behind square for his second boundary. The final ball pitches on middle and zips past off stump to remind the batsmen that there is still a threat.

Andrew Benton: Many congrats to India, but are England really that bad? The West Indies series will be a crucial test of England's mettle.

Ben Thapa: The surprise impact of India's seamers in this series somewhat mirrors that of Moeen's spin in the reverse series in 2014.

Sharma, neck jewellery jangling like...no, let's not go with that comparison, gets one to rise up at Jennings, but the tall Durham left-hander is on his toes and keeps the ball down, almost off the bat handle. Still only the one slip and gully catching though. Another maiden.

It's a slower surface, therefore the margin of error for the bowler is that much smaller. Ashwin has got a couple of deliveries that are the perfect length, but it's not easy to do that often.

Ashwin twirls away again, probing on the line of off-stump, but Cook looks more resolute after edging that fine delivery that zipped away from the bat in the previous over and he calmly plays out a maiden.

    Jennings 12, Cook 9

Alastair Cook has had a lot on his mind, his second child was born shortly before the start of the Bangladesh tour in October and there has been constant speculation that he might relinquish the captaincy. But he can still play a cover drive to a seamer and he collects a delightful first boundary.

That wasn't difficult. That was a fine outside edge, he should have adjusted to that.

There's the first dropped catch already in the third over. Cook prodded at Ashwin, it turned and took the edge but flew out out of the gloves of Parthiv Patel.

Jack Megaw: Football teams, rugby teams, ice hockey teams - in all of these the manager decides the team. Why do it by committee in cricket?

Piers: Trevor Bayliss - "good times ahead" - when you're at the bottom, the only way is up and we've been well and truly anchored here.

Seam from the other end in the lanky form of long-haired, newly-nuptialed Ishant Sharma. One the one slip and a gully and little to concern the batsmen. We could end the match as a draw with an hour to go, but that's a way off yet.

I'm just hoping for some sensible batting. I think Cook's mind's in a bit of turmoil over the captaincy. You don't want to be over-attacking - you want good defence, look to score, good defence, look to score.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who has 28 wickets in the series, begins proceedings and tempts Jennings outside the off stump. The left-hander accepts the challenge and confidently drives through the covers for two.

Doesn't look like the proverbial minefield does it? But Ashwin and Jadeja are going to be tweaking them down any moment. England with all 10 wickets intact. The India players have had their huddle and quite a long talking to. Keaton Jennings was already on the edge of the outfield and is eventually joined by his captain. We're almost ready to rumble.

India are having a team photo on the outfield. I remember once playing for Oxford University against the Free Foresters. After the second day, the Foresters were well placed and had a team photo on the third morning - and we beat them.
