    Jadeja 12-1-30-2

The previous ball, Jennings came down the pitch to whip Jadeja through mid-wicket. He was looking for a repeat dose, but this was pushed wider. The leftie almost trod on the ball before he hit it, with a bit of boot taking it on to the bat. Moeen Ali the new man.

We've been singing Jennings' praises but he's gone now - on that occasion he came down the pitch, was in two minds whether to block or drive, and it just ballooned up.

Hmmm. When do England start to panic? Now Keaton Jennings has gone, outfoxed into prodding a return catch back to Ravi Jadeja, who has removed both openers since lunch. India are whoop-whooping, the crowd is baying and England are one more quick one from being in the soup.

England don't play Test cricket again until July but you'd think Cook, Hameed, Jennings and Root could occupy the top four places.

You wait four years for England to find an opener, then two come along at once. Keaton Jennings reaches a half-century to go with the century he made on debut in the fourth Test. First Haseeb Hameed, now Jennings. Hameed to open and Jennings to bat three in the summer?

Jadeja, the Hank Scorpio lookalike, continues over the wicket to leftie Jennings, who plays the reverse sweep like other batsmen play the cover drive. He must have rubber in his wrists. Round the wicket to Root, who is feeling his way. Does Joe need a new bat already? He's waving his willow in the direction of the dressing room.

Have we just seen Alastair Cook's last innings as England Test captain? A meeting with his great mate Andrew Strauss will decide his future after Christmas. India call on the pace of Umesh Yadav, noise in Chennai has cranked up, Keaton Jennings is looking a little loose outside off stump. All of a sudden, it feels more difficult to bat.

    Jadeja 10-1-23-1

You know how I said the delivery was miles down the leg side? It was even further than that. I don't think it would have hit a second set of stumps. Cook was on the back foot, wafting the bat away from the body. A horror dismissal. Joe Root is the new man.

It was right off the face of the bat and went very quickly to leg slip but straight to him. He was there for a reason and Jadeja has come up trumps. Cook has been out like that before as well and it was a bit like David Gower getting caught down the leg side off pace bowlers rather too often. It's dismissal number six against Jadeja, you'd think Ashwin would have been the one to cause him problems.

    Cook c Rahul b Jadeja 49 (Eng 103-1)

Oh, skipper. What a way to go. Getting so far across his stumps in a bid to combat Ravi Jadeja, Alastair Cook flirts at a delivery that is miles down the leg side, clipping it straight to leg slip KL Rahul, who takes a very smart catch. That's six times Jadeja has got Cook in this series. He'll probably punch him at the end of the match. A little opening for India.

Cook will probably average 40 for the series, because he's a good player. He's been OK, but I think there's a lot on his mind about the captaincy. He's a quality player - drop him, and you'll pay for it. Even when he's not at his best, he still makes runs.

As it's the end of the year, I might start dishing out some alternative awards. Eoin Morgan should clearly be honoured for his services to the Bangladesh tourist board. James Vince gets cover drive of the year. I'll think of more.

How confident are you in Keaton Jennings having a long England career on a scale of 1-10?

I'll give you six for Jennings and as a point of comparison I'll give you eight for Hameed. There is a fair chance Jennings could be a susbtantial England player but I'd put Hameed above him.
