Ashwin is posing all sort of problems for Stokes, with some beautiful deliveries and England are under all sorts of pressure. Then there is the bouncer, where you have a milli-second to react. It's so easy from up here to say just sway out of the way but I always remember Andrew Hilditch kept getting out to the hook. He was a highly intelligent Australian lawyer - it didn't stop him impulsively hooking though.

Looking at a replay of that Moeen muddle, he was very lucky not to demolish his stumps with his bat as he fell. At the other end, Ashwin has Stokes on torture rack, tickling his feet as he pulls his limbs apart. Outside edge beaten, inside edge past the stumps. I feel scared of my own shadow.

Umesh Yadav back into the attack, bowling some howitzers at Ben Stokes. A short ball rears like a serpent, Stokes doing well to jerk his head and gloves inside the line. What is Moeen doing?!?! An indescribable pull/hook/duck/sway/close-the-eyes-and-hope-for-the-best falls short of fine leg. He ended up on the seat of his pants. I fear for what will happen to him in Australia.

Rob Stubbs: The English are so inherently pessimistic! You wouldn't hear the Aussies whining about a potential collapse!

Richard sumption: Thought of the day...who would win....England's batsmen facing England's bowlers v Indian batsmen facing Indian bowlers??

    India need 6 wickets

Ashwin is round the wicket with that familiar action of a man trying to free himself from a straight-jacket. Moeen unwisely plays against the spin and almost offers a leading edge to cover. This is like a horror film or an episode of The Office - best watched from behind the sofa.

We're not robots but there are ways of getting out and in this situation your first thought shouldn't be scoring runs, it should be defence.

What is the anatomy of a batting collapse? How do they start? Why does one wicket bring six? Are England panicked collapsers, or do they solemnly walk off the edge of the cliff? Has Trevor Bayliss made it back to Australia yet? Does he know what's going on? Has that hernia procedure turned in to heart surgery? To be fair to England, it's good of them to see 2016 out with another collapse. You know, just for old times' sake.

I can't watch this, it will be traumatic for a while. You have your heart in your mouth when Stokes is batting against Ashwin. He doesn't want to get forward and yet he's not comfortable playing back.

Good lord. Just when you think it can't get any more difficult, Ravichandran Ashwin comes on. It must be brilliant to take four for spit then call on the world's number one bowler. Huge appeal against Stokes, big conflab over a review, not taken. Good call. There was a big inside edge. It feels like a wicket could go down every ball.

Jonny Bairstow scored 352 in the series at an average of 44 and he too has just fallen short of Vaughan's record, finishing with 1,407 for the calendar year.

The fox is well and truly in the hen house. England batsmen are frantically padding up. Thigh pads and boxes fly around the dressing room. Looking again, I can't decide if Bairstow got a leading edge. Either way, it looked ugly. Jadeja had loads of ground to make up, but glided across the turf like a wide receiver. Ben Stokes is the new man. England have lost four for 26.

What a wonderful, wonderful catch. What an awful, awful stroke. Jonny Bairstow somehow clips a leg-stump half-volley straight up into the air. Unluckily for him, the only India fielder who would get to it is underneath it. Ravi Jadeja, who can't keep out of the action, runs back from square and takes a very difficult over-the-shoulder catch look easier than brushing your teeth. This is now a collapse. Panic.

If he can get through the next 15 runs or so I think Moeen will be alright but he is a better starter against the seam bowlers. When you first come in it's getting in, then it's not a difficult pitch.

Moeen on strike. Jadeja has two short legs, one square and on straight. If you say that out loud it will sound like he finds walking tricky. Only three catchers in place for new man Bairstow, which is curious. Jadeja has 3-18 in this spell. England tick the balls down. Balls turn to overs, overs turn to hours, hours turn to sessions. That's the theory, anyway.

Is it OK to reveal that I had a few quid on an India win? The thing with this current slide is that Ravichandran Ashwin hasn't joined the party yet. If he gets his fingers warm then India could get through the England batting like a chicken phall. You think that this pair and Ben Stokes will have to do the bulk of the work for the tourists.

Jonathan said at lunchtime there was trouble ahead. I said it would be fine but I'm not sure sweeping off middle stump is the best idea. The onus is to keep your wicket intact.
