  1. wicket

    Root c Kohli b Ashwin 54 (Eng 128-2)

Roy hasn't given it away from Joe Root has, not for the first time in India this winter. A slog-sweep goes high into the night sky and India captain Virat Kohli is under it at mid-wicket. Ashwin strikes in his first over and the partnership is broken just after they had moved it to exactly 100.

  2. 50 runs

    50 for Root - Eng 126-1published at 19.2 overs

And a reverse sweep off the next ball brings up the same landmark for Root.

  3. 50 runs

    50 for Roy - Eng 122-1published at 19.1 overs

Ravichandran Ashwin - spin masters from both ends on now - and a single for Roy brings up his 50. After a scratch start, he's settled in well. Needs to keep going though.

  4. Eng 121-1published at 19 overs

Ravindra Jadeja continuing to bowl brilliantly, just two off that over and one of them a leg-bye. Roy and Root both a run away from half-centuries.

  5. Eng 119-1published at 18 overs

England's batsmen going at even pace here - Roy has 49 off 49, Root 48 off 48. Ready to resume now. Jadeja to continue...

Eng 119-1 - Bumrah drops Roypublished at 18 overs

Jasprit Bumrah gets his fingertips to a Jason Roy pull - he seemed a bit slow to react and his feet didn't get particularly high off the ground. I'm being harsh because Roy smacked that out of the middle but technically a chance. He didn't take any pace off it either and it went for four after Root found the boundary with a handsome drive earlier in the over. 11 off the over and that's drinks.

It's important that England keep rotating the strike and try to find the boundary off Jadeja.

Jadeja is keeping it tight, as he always does. The key for India will be to how Ashwin bowls. He won't get anything from the wicket and the wet dew could challenge him.

  11. Eng 108-1published at 17 overs

    Jadeja 4-0-18-0, Pandya 3-0-24-0

No aces from Federer Jadeja but a good few dot balls, three in this over as well as three singles. The left-arm spinner in a real groove here.

  12. Eng 105-1published at 16 overs

    Roy 43, Root 40

Nice from Root as Pandya bangs it in and Joe brings out the ramp - one-bounce four. Down the track, he doesn't connect properly but scampers a quick single, putting India under pressure. Wide from Pandya and Roy climbs into that. That's the 100 up and England are going well here. Just the 277 more required though.

Richie Macca: Can't wait for another gutsy 27 in 27 balls from Morgan before getting out unceremoniously.

  14. Eng 94-1published at 15 overs

Jadeja doesn't hang around when he's bowling, racing through his over. It's like a Roger Federer service game, moving to his mark quickly and not giving his opponent time to settle. Not ideal for the live text commentator either. Five more nudged and nurdled by Root and Roy.

England need a 150-run partnership to have any chance of chasing this down.

  16. 6 runs

    Eng 89-1 (target 382)published at 14 overs

Big, big, big, big six from Jason Roy, smashing Pandya way over deep mid-wicket for the first maximum of England's innings. Two more singles brings the partnership to 61.

One good thing the ground authorities here in Cuttack have done is to ban the airhorns. They hurt the ears in Pune, making a right racket.

  18. Eng 81-1published at 13 overs

Thousands of people in the crowd have their phones out to shine beacons of light in the dark like a Coldplay concert. Thankfully, this is a lot more exciting than watching Chris Martin and his mates. Roy sweeps for four as he and Root bring up the 50 partnership off 45 balls.

The India fans will want their team to win but England to get 350. That way they also see almost 750 runs in the day.

  20. Eng 75-1published at 12 overs

A double change as Hardik Pandya comes on for the Thundercats' Bumrah. A well-directed bouncer has Roy swaying out the way but he isn't going to allow two in a row to go past - the England opener hooks square for four and wants to know if it was a no-ball for two head-high bouncers in the. Nothing doing.
