  1. Eng 24-1published at 5 overs

    Roy 18, Root 5

Jason Roy's had enough of this ducking and weaving the short stuff as he absolutely cracks the ball over mid-wicket. That was lovely, a proper flat-batted thunk, Roy throwing his arms through the shot. Gabriel's reaching 91mph but Roy takes on the short ball, again clubbing it over mid-off. Plenty of power behind that.

That boundary was a bit of a gift really. Fair enough Jason Holder hasn't got the pace of Gabriel but he should keep the accuracy on the other end, that was loose and wide.

  3. Eng 14-1published at 4 overs

    Holder 2-0-6-0

I'm not entirely sure why there's no hot spot or snicko for this series. Overturning a decision is instantly made harder without those pretty crucial pieces of DRS. That's nice from Joe Root, cutting Jason Holder to the boundary to get off the mark, before he overbalances and ends up nearly face-first on the wicket.

Gordon M:  What is the point of having reviews if they don't have all the available technology? Why don't they have it?

Helga Chapman:  Roy had a lucky escape there.

Noah Dodds: Bad start from England. I still fancy them as heavy favourites though.

  5. Eng 9-1published at 3 overs

    Roy 9, Root 0

Jason Roy can't quite get the pace of this pitch or of Shannon Gabriel at the minute. He's hustled again by the fast bowler while Carols Brathwaite menacingly swings his arm around in the field. Joe Root takes strike and now he's the one to be beaten for pace, late on a shortish delivery, but he manages to see the over out.

  6. Eng 9-1published at 2.3 overs

Another shout against Jason Roy, this time as he's struck on the pads by a bustling Shannon Gabriel. Roy was beaten for pace there, but the delivery was sliding down leg. That's much better from Roy; straight back down the ground, past the bowler for four. When he goes aerial he looks far less secure, though, just chipping the ball past a leaping fielder.

Playing for the school first XI, I shelled an absolute dolly at 3rd man. The bloke goes on to score a ton and win the game for his side. I did get him out though, every cloud eh..

Nice quiet start to England's innings, then. The West Indies have lost their only review, which could cost them later on. They were all convinced that Jason Roy had edged that Jason Holder delivery.

  9. Not outpublished at 1.5 overs

    Eng 2-1

The umpire shakes his hands about. Not out. The West Indies dressing room chew on their fingernails while Jason Holder looks thoroughly unimpressed. He has a quick chat with the umpire before stomping back to his mark. Jason Roy blinks and settles back down to steal a single.

The third umpire is taking his time...

They might be unlucky with the technology here but with the naked eye it looked like it was out.

    Eng 1-1

Wicketkeeper Shai Hope instantly made the T-sign after he'd caught the ball, and Jason Holder looks convinced. Admittedly, I've never met a fast bowler who wasn't convinced someone had edged it. But can this be over-turned without hot spot?

  13. West Indies reviewpublished at 1.4 overs

    Eng 1-1

A huge appeal now for a caught behind against Jason Roy - the umpire says not out. Jason Holder and his side are convinced, though, so we're going upstairs. There's no hot spot, however...

That was unbelievable, he went with the right arm across the body rather than traditionally sticking your left hand out. It was an unbelievable leap.

  15. dropped catch

Roy dropped on 1published at 1.3 overs

    Eng 1-1

That would have been a sensational catch from Carlos Brathwaite. Jason Roy chucked everything into a pull shot, the ball flew through the air and Brathwaite, all six foot four inches of him, went flying to his left. He got a hand to it but he couldn't cling on - he's saved a boundary, though.

So a first-ball duck for Sam Billings and some good carry from Shannon Gabriel. Jason Holder is going to bring himself on at the other end.

I think the slip fielder was too deep. I saw Shai Hope put his head in his hands - because it was so short maybe he was the right person to go for it.

  18. Eng 1-1published at 1 over

Just short of first slip! Joe Root throws the big drive at Shannon Gabriel and the ball drops centimeters short in front of the diving Ashley Nurse. Root chucks a big grin in Gabriel's direction. Some excellent carry from the fast bowler in that over, bowling with the breeze.

What I like about Gabriel is the shape that he gets back in. He went wider of the crease but he has the ability to cut back in. He has been a massive standout in this side, he has pace, control and he gets a bit of movement.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 0.2 overs

    Billings c Powell b Gabriel (Eng 1-1)

Gone! Second ball of the innings! Oh, that's a good delivery from Shannon Gabriel and it flew off Billings' outside edge. Second slip parried it up and Kieran Powell at first slip snaffled the rebound. Billings trudges off the field.
