    Roy c Stirling b McCarthy 20 (Eng 60-2)

Barry McCarthy, the one change in the Ireland team today, comes on from the Nursery End and he has made an early breakthrough in his first over at Lord's, driven straight to short extra cover by Roy and the short but robust figure of Paul Stirling makes no mistake.

A bit of news for you... earlier today India confirmed they will compete in the Champions Trophy being held in England and Wales from 1-18 June.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) missed a deadline to name a squad for the tournament after the International Cricket Council (ICC) changed its revenue-sharing model.

However, a BBCI statement said it "unanimously decided that the Indian cricket team will participate".

A meeting to select the team will now take place on Monday. More on that here.

    Run-rate 4.58

Root gets off the mark from his fifth ball with a single off O'Brien out to mid-wicket, which is the largest boundary today at 75 metres. Down the ground the distance is in the sixties. But a relatively modest nine fours and no sixes so far.

  5. Eng 49-1published at 11 overs

    Run-rate 4.45

Two slips in for the new England Test captain Joe Root and he is pinned on the pad second ball. Ireland consider a review but there was a big inside edge.

Tim Murtagh used all his Lord's experience here. He has been moving the ball down the slope and the ball after being driven down the ground he turned the ball round and got it to move back up the slope. The more times Alex Hales gets bowled the more people will question if he is good enough to open the batting.

    Hales b Murtagh 32 (Eng 49-1)

He's gone this time though. Hales had just driven a slower ball from Murtagh through long-off for his sixth boundary but the canny seamer nipped one back off the seam and it rattled through the gate.

  8. Hales pulls for fourpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 7 May 2017

Alex Hales has hit a couple of big shots, including this pull for four off the bowling of Peter Chase.

    Roy 15, Hales 28

The first bowling change as the burly figure of redheaded all-rounder Kevin O'Brien, who hit that swashbuckling century when Ireland beat England in the 2011 World Cup, comes into the attack from the Pavilion End. Just the one run comes from his opening over and time for a drink. Might be a Bovril.

Murtagh got that to nip back through the gate and catch Jason Roy on the top of the pad. Niall O'Brien did that classic wicketkeeper thing of throwing the ball in the air even though he knows it is not out.

    Roy 15, Hales 27

Excellent containment again from Murtagh, still just the one boundary conceded. We have a new sound box so the unique hum (audible hum rather than olfactory) of the Lord's crowd is coming through the headphones loud and clear.

    Chase 0-32 from 4

Chase is struggling though and when he drops short Hales hammers him for two fours in three balls. Plenty of colour in the crowd, despite the cold conditions. There is a thickset bearded gentleman in a bright green three-piece suit. A patriotic Irishman or a Bognor Regis Town FC fan celebrating their superb promotion. Or both?

  14. Roy finding his rhythmpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 7 May 2017

After a slightly scratchy start, Jason Roy found the boundary with this punch into the offside.

  15. Eng 34-0published at 7 overs

    Roy 13, Hales 19

The technical problems continue, we're going to need a new sound box, nothing lasts forever. Murtagh is familiar with the vagaries of Lord's having played here for Middlesex for many years and he has only conceded the one boundary. England batting coach Graham Thorpe looks on from the balcony with a woolly hat on to keep out the cold. It was very pleasant in the south yesterday too. But the weather is expected to improve as the day goes on.

Great value of Tim Murtagh here this morning. He has bowled full and straight, wicket to wicket, and has challenged both of England's batsmen. Any doubt Ireland can sow is good for them.

  18. Eng 31-1published at 6 overs

    Chase 0-24 from 3

Chase is in the early 80s-mph but he has conceded four boundaries already, the latest a back foot punch from Roy, who holds the pose stylishly for the cameras.

  19. Eng 24-0published at 5 overs

    Roy 7, Hales 16

Murtagh keeps the boundaries at bay. He's not explosive in pace by any means, often in the mid-70s but there is enough movement off the seam to keep the batsmen watchful. England were 31-1 at this stage during their march to victory at Bristol the other day, when they needed only 20 overs to reach their target of 127.

The fact Moeen can't get into this team is interesting. He's been the number one choice for England as a spin option for so long. It underlines what strength in depth England have got and what a good one-day side they are.
