  1. Eng 22-0published at 4 overs

Hales is in full on flourish mode outside off. He latches on to another wide, full ball and sends a swashbuckling drive through cover for four. Makes this game look easy when he is in form.

There is the now familiar low hum of noise about the ground in these early stages. England are making steady, efficient progress without setting off any big fireworks just yet.

  2. Eng 14-0published at 3 overs

    Roy 5, Hales 8

I must confess I didn't see much of that last over, an engineer was trying to fix my monitor, blissfully unaware of my role at the coalface. But it was steadier stuff from Murtagh, borne out by the fact only a single was taken.

  4. Eng 9-0published at 2 overs

    Roy, 4 Hales 8

Peter Chase takes up the attack from the Pavilion End but when he overpitches Alex Hales drives him past the diving fielder. There is an anxious moment for Hales when he plays back to a short one and comes close to the stumps but he then collects a second boundary with a stylish cover drive.

Easy day this for Tim Murtagh! He has been bowling at this end for the last 10 or 12 years for Middlesex.

  6. Eng 4-0published at 1 over

    Roy 4, Hales 0

Some movement from steady seamer Tim Murtagh but Jason Roy opens England's account with a straight drive to the fence. The boundaries are quite a way in from the edge of the stands so we should see a few more as the day progresses.

This is Lord's so we don't need gimmicks. Did you see the new Golf Sixes event? The players were coming down steps with smoke billowing, someone dressed as a foam number six (probably a struggling actor) it was like a cross between Stars in Their Eyes and It's a Knockout. Anyway, the players are out there and we're all set.

Remember that time when the Netherlands beat England at Lord's in a T20? And Ireland have beaten before in an ODI of course, Kevin O'Brien hitting 113 from 63 balls in the 2011 World Cup. So it could happen...

More from former England batsman Ed Joyce, now back with Ireland, speaking to Sky Sports: "The team is playing with a bit of weight on our shoulders to justify the position we are being given [with potential Test status]. That is possibly not making us play to our potential. But we are going to try and enjoy today. We get on very well in our team and we are going to try and take a leaf out of England's book.

"Adil [Rashid] is a very good one-day bowler. His variations are straight-on or googlies. But we have chatted about him ahead of today. A few of us have played against him in county cricket, so we need to play him better today."

  12. 'A day for the supporters'published at 10:48 British Summer Time 7 May 2017

Ireland batsman Ed Joyce, speaking to Sky Sports: "The game is massive. It is historic for us. We are expecting a full house. Back when I first started playing for Ireland, the thought of being here with Ireland was unthinkable.

"We have a good administration. The organisation has grown to an impressive one. This is a day for the supporters. There are a big number coming over to support us."

So a cold start, looks more like February than May out there at the moment, but it should brighten up this afternoon. Will there be a bit of assistance for the swing bowlers at the start of the match or will it be too cold? Also, how much of that forecast will be needed? We shall see.

  16. 'The lads are fired up'published at 10:38 British Summer Time 7 May 2017

Ireland captain Will Porterfield: "Bowling first is more a reflection on what we have today and the overhead conditions.

"We have one change - Barry McCarthy for Stuart Thompson.

"It is a big occasion but we have to step over the white line and do our processes. It is not about making up numbers, it is about performances. The lads are fired up and raring to go. It was disappointing what happened at Bristol. We need to be a bit more positive."

  17. England captain's view from the tosspublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 7 May 2017

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We'd have bowled first too - at Lord's you look up not down."

When asked about the balance of his team: "We're going with four seamers again, meaning Moeen Ali misses out. When Ben Stokes comes back, he changes everything because he can be our fourth seamer and allows us to fit Moeen back in."

It's cool and overcast out there but Ireland have won the toss at least. They are going to bowl first. Jackets and even woolly hats in operation out in the middle. England name an unchanged side from the match at Bristol.

England have not had the best of fortunes playing at Lord's in ODIs recently, winning only three of their last 12 matches. We're ready for the all-important details of the day, which could go a long way to deciding how long the match will last, namely the toss.
