It is very, very comfortable now for South Africa. Things may change when the sun goes down and the lights come into effect. The shadow from the scoreboard is starting to creep onto the square now.

  2. SA 106-1 (target 340)published at 19 overs

Oh, nearly. Rashid induces the edge from du Plessis but it's just short of Joe Root at slip. Stokes is going to bowl the next over. Good news but one to keep an eye on...

During the drinks break Ben Stokes has been stretching his legs. He's grimacing and doesn't look happy. He's been given a tablet to take now. Anyway. Adil Rashid to continue...

I think it's tough for Mark Wood. There's no room for him to get back into his stride - he's got to get going straight away in a tough series. He might be someone we see improve towards the Champions Trophy as he plays more and builds that consistency up.

  6. drinks break

Drinks break - SA 102-1published at 18 overs

Cheers catch in the throat as du Plessis nicks Stokes down to third man. It was in the air for a while but no-one was near it. Decent start from Stokes but the 100 is up for South Africa and you can watch how Hashim Amla got to 50 below...

Ben Stokes has the ball in hand... time for England's talisman...

  8. SA 97-1 (target 340)published at 17 overs

    Amla 53 off 55, du Plessis 36 off 34

Shout of "catch" as Faf du Plessis lifts Rashid over the covers but it's safe and runs away for four.

It's been a very classy knock from Hashim Amla. Elegant shots all around the wicket.

  10. 50 runs

    50 for Amla - SA 89-1published at 16 overs

Plunkett finally strays and Amla flicks away for a boundary to bring up his 50. Big appeal from England as the ball flicks something on the way to Buttler. It's the thigh pad so nothing doing there. Amla then misses with a waft to a fuller one. England have bene unlucky not to pick up a wicket in this passage of play.

Faf du Plessis has started like Joe Root did - he made 21 from his first nine deliveries and then eight from his next 20 balls.

  12. SA 82-1published at 15 overs

Rashid races through his third over and concedes just three from it. Excellent.

Some friends and I used to play a game when going out called 'lookalikes' where we would pick random people and score them out of 5 for looking like famous people. Out in Derby one night my friend picked a man at the bar and told me 'He looked like a fat Dominic Cork' scoring 3 out of 5 for his look a likeness. I pointed out that it actually was Dominic Cork. To which she went to tell him about our game and how he only scored 3 for looking like himself. He was somewhat unimpressed.

Plunkett and Rashid are doing a fine job here, and Amla, who looked in such great nick early on, is uncomfortable facing the Durham paceman. Du Plessis tries to break the shackles by advancing down the track and going aerial but he's nowhere the pitch of that. Lucky for him it drops safe. A shot of a man unsure what else to do. Bit early for that.

The good thing about that over from Rashid was you could see Faf du Plessis wasn't picking all the deliveries. That's all you need in one-day cricket - batsman needing that split-second longer to pick the delivery. They need longer to play the shot.

  16. SA 74-1published at 13 overs

Rash has almost done for du Plessis there, the South African just dabbing his bat down in time to prevent the google getting through the gate. More applause from the Yorkies for one of their own and well deserved too - just one from that over.

Huge cheers as Jonny Bairstow appears on the boundary edge with some drinks. Chants of "Jonny, Jonny, Jonny Bairstow" ring out and the very act of running around the edge garners a round of applause. Fair to say almost all the locals will still be cheesed off that he's not playing. Liam Plunkett has started well and is extracting some bounce from this pitch. Amla and du Plessis look a little uncomfortable when facing him.

Amla was groping forward for that Rashid delivery and he rather got away with it. He was pushing at it and didn't know too much about it.

  20. SA 69-1 (target 340)published at 11 overs

Two boundaries conceded by Rashid but he's unlucky here. The first ball beats Amla's outside edge while the last one is a googly that takes the inside edge and runs down to the fence.

Meanwhile, have a watch of one of Faf du Plessis' cuts for four off Woakes below...
