Eoin Morgan had his bell rung by Chris Morris at the end of the previous over, now the rapid Kagiso Rabada is back and hunting a breakthrough with a slip in place. Rabada gets it through in the high-80s as Southampton hums in the background. Stokes crunches a drive, but is denied a boundary by some good fielding at extra cover.

Shot, boy! That's enormous. Decent-ish ball on leg stump, Ben Stokes just decided it had to go. It would be interesting to have 20 more overs of Stokes.

    Stokes 37 from 41 balls

Good lord! Ben Stokes has absolutely mullered this one. Chris Morris has been launched over mid-wicket for six. The follow-through was that of a golfer nailing a drive down the middle. I wonder what Hashim Amla is thinking about this...

Phehlukwayo tried a slower ball there but lost the line and Morgan was smart, knowing where the field was to glance it fine for four.

Perish the thought, but I think South Africa will have to make a bowling change.

  6. Eng 144-3published at 29 overs

Ben Stokes has got ink all over his arms, more tattoo than skin. He takes a single and then leans on his bat as the wind ruffles his shirt. Morgan, in the silkiest of touch, tickles a hippy ball fine for four. The England skipper loves batting here - he averages more than 75 in Southampton.

  7. Pick your best Champions Trophy XIpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 27 May 2017

In the interval Simon Hughes will be selecting his ideal 11 for the ICC Champions Trophy out of the players who will be taking part.

You can have your say by emailing us at tms@bbc.co.uk or via twitter on #bbccricket

So basically out of all the players from the eight teams who have qualified, what would be the best composite 11?

TMS will also be hearing from the man who is organising both the Champions Trophy and Women’s World Cup - Steve Elworthy.

Morgan somehow manages to cut for four between two fielders at point. Bowler Chris Morris wears the most disbelieving look you will ever see. It's like someone has been to the bar and forgot to order his Pina Colada. Is it going to rain? It feels heavy. Is it raining anywhere else?

It was a bit of a heave from Stokes but he got quite a bit on it. No fielders there so it was a safe heave. It's broken the shackles a bit and now De Villiers is going to shuffle his field.

    Morgan 26, Stokes 29

Wallop. Ben Stokes has had enough of this one-day-cricket-from-the-1990s nonsense, fetching Andile Phehlukwayo from outside off stump, over the cow rope. The signal comes from umpire Rob Bailey, who has decided it's chilly enough to be wearing a thick, red coat. I came to work in shorts...

A par score would be around 290. Boundaries are harder to hit here because the field is so much bigger but I would have thought England will be looking for around that.

  12. Eng 124-3published at 26 overs

Chris Morris into the attack, replacing Dwaine Pretorius, who might be the most handsome man to ever play international cricket. Morris has got elbows all over the place as he runs in, twice flashing the ball past Morgan's edge when the skipper is looking to cut. Sharp single, hesistancy, Morgan dives to make his ground. Would have been miles out.

And with that I'll send you over to Stephan Shemilt to take you through to the end of England's innings.

    Catch you in a bit.

  14. Eng 120-3published at 25 overs

So Morgan survives and Stokes adds a few to his tally as we reach the mid-way point of England's innings.

An intriguing battle so far, one that would definitely be going South Africa's way had they not dropped all those catches.

Hashim Amla's miss is the pick of a bad bunch...

De Kock has had a tricky time up at the stumps, though it's difficult to a bowler of 80mph.

    And another!

Quinton de Kock shells Eoin Morgan this time - it's a tough chance with the keeper standing up and a thick edge from the England skipper.

But those chances have to be taken to keep this England side in check.

In a way it's an old-fashioned bowling attack. England like to pick wicket-takers and bowl aggressively, but this pair could be in any county XI 15 years ago where the emphasis was on bottling up the batsmen and waiting for them to make a mistake.

  18. Eng 117-3published at 24 overs

    Morgan 22, Stokes 19

Pretorius responds with four dot balls but Stokes is not prepared to miss out again, coming slightly down the ground to flick a short delivery through wide mid-on for four.

  19. Eng 113-3published at 23.1 overs

Alright, here we go Ben Stokes.

The all-rounder smacks a straight drive back over Pretorius' head - it looks like being a six all the way but tails off to bounce just inside the rope.

A signal that Stokes is ready to attack?

The run-out was a body blow because Root was playing beautifully and impishly with his shot selection too.
