Dwaine Pretorius continues and it's apparent that Eoin Morgan does not rate him, trying to pelt the ball to all parts.

That can be a dangerous approach though as one ball just misses Morgan's outside edge...

...hang on, what's gone on here? Has Joe Root been run out at the non-striker's end?

Another tight over from Maharaj, just four from it.

In case you might reckon Dwaine Pretorius must be quicker than we're giving him credit for, you can judge for yourself - watch how Joe Root tucks into his bowling for four.

  5. Eng 74-2published at 14 overs

    Root 36, Morgan 4

Eoin Morgan is a man in touch and plays the shot of the match so far to smite Dwaine Pretorius through the covers for four.

He'll be looking to keep the scoring rate high, despite the loss of Hales.

He tries to play the cut shot and it gets tight on him. It's a really good catch by De Kock. Hales was well set at Headingley and then got out, now he's done it here. It's an important breakthrough for South Africa.

Ah, well that Rabada drop didn't prove to be too costly, then.

Hales tries to cut Pretorius away but it's too close to his body, he gets a thick edge and it's a fine catch by keeper Quinton de Kock standing up.

AB de Villiers is rewarded for sticking with Pretorius after a dire first two overs - he'll probably take a five-for now, won't he?

Eoin Morgan is the next man in.

    Eng 68-1

Alex Hales looks to tuck into Maharaj but his sweep flies straight towards Rabada...

...dearie me, the young fast bowler has not only shelled a relatively straight-forward chance, he's also tipped it over the rope for six.

    Awful. A lifeline for Hales.

  9. Eng 62-1published at 12.2 overs

Joe Root is on the charge, getting under a short-pitched delivery from Keshav Maharaj to swing it away for four...

  10. Eng 58-1published at 12 overs

You won't have seen more bang average medium-paced bowling in international cricket than Dwaine Pretorius for a long time.

He reminds me of the West Indies' Corey Collymore, who lost all his pace after battling with injuries.

Pretorius barely registering in the high 70s mph, keeper Quinton de Kock is standing up.

Joe Root tries a ramp shot that just about comes off for four before smiting Pretorius away for another boundary. 11 off the over. Buffet bowling that.

Roy has had a period of not batting much. He didn't play much in the IPL, missed out on against Ireland. When you're in one-day mode it's difficult to get some rhythm.

  12. Eng 47-1published at 11 overs

It's a double bowling change for the Proteas as Keshav Maharaj enters the fray on debut.

He's a slow-left arm spinner, who's played seven Tests for South Africa so far.

Will England target him too? Not so far, a good start for Maharaj, who finds some nice drift to limit to the hosts to just four singles off the over.

It's been good by South Africa, they've bowled nicely and fielded well. Headingley was a really good game of cricket. I get the feeling all three games will be full of skill and power.

  14. Eng 43-1published at 10 overs

    Hales 14, Root 19

Dwaine Pretorius is on for South Africa, replacing Chris Morris.

Good-looking guy - even has a member of the BBC Sport staff "swooning a little bit".

Ugly-looking long hop though that Joe Root drives straight down the pitch for four.

England are definitely targeting the medium-pace of Pretorius as Root comes down the pitch once again to hit another boundary.

  15. Eng 35-1published at 9 overs

Kagiso Rabada tries to ratchet up the pace again but Joe Root is rising to the challenge to keep him out.

It's a poor delivery on the last ball of the over but Root misses out, his orthodox pull only bringing one.

Maybe he should've tried a more unorthodox strike, such as Alex Hales did earlier on...

I simply don't understand why Root's position is never questioned. He is far too slow for one day cricket. Every time. His strike rate never gets above 80 and he puts pressure on everyone else. Bairstow is a far superior one day player.

I never want Kumar Sangakkara to retire. Sublime batsman to watch.

Joe Root isn't half bad either - he's faced some decent bowling so far but Chris Morris then digs in a woeful delivery that England's Test captain dismisses with a pull shot for four.

Meanwhile, Kumar Sangakkara is still batting for Surrey against Essex.

Yesterday Surrey were 31-5, which Sanga has turned around with his fifth successive first-class ton. Now he's homing in on 200.

Rabada tries to deceive Hales with a slower ball but the England opener reads it well to glance him fine for a couple.

An inside edge then brings a single, before Root dabs it down for another.

A more straightforward over from Rabada for England to face...

...they'll be mindful of him producing another ball like the beauty that did for Roy though, which you can now watch below.
