    BBC Test Match Special

"We're not the finished article," says England director of Cricket Andrew Strauss. And this was before today when he saw them 20-6 after five overs.

In an extensive interview you can listen to now on BBC Test Match Special, Strauss says of his skipper: "Eoin Morgan is doing a great job, he has a real clarity with his thoughts on white ball cricket and that really rubs off on the players."

Quite a day for Toby Roland-Jones, making his debut and coming into bat in the 20th over with his team on 82-7. The Middlesex bowler, who we should see with the ball after the lunch interval, made an unbeaten 37 from as many balls. Here we see him hit the only six of the match to date.

There were a couple of brighter moments for England, a third fifty in four innings for Jonny Bairstow and here is the redoubtable Yorkshireman striking one of the eight boundaries he recorded today in his 51 from 67 balls.

Rabada took three wickets in an over, leaving England 20-6 after five. Many of them were quite similar but here's Adil Rashid out first ball.

We thought the golden boy, Joe Root, would save the day as he has so often, but the Yorkshireman lasted only five balls and was lbw for two playing across the line to left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell, leaving England 7-2 in the second over.

So while we wait for play to resume at 15:15 BST, let's take a look back at just how England managed to get themselves in such a mess in this match.

Jason Roy needed a score, having made only nine in the previous two matches, but after clipping a four he edged the impressive Kagiso Rabada to slip in the first over.

Robin Lapper: We can't complain. This sort of thing will go hand in hand with the big-score cricket England and Morgan have started.

This is a surreal sight, not Finn only conceding two singles, but the umpires taking the bails off for lunch in a one-day game. Not sure the crowd can quite believe what has occurred today either. The South African openers head off for a spot of lunch, I'd have chosen the BBQ chicken from that menu we saw earlier, with 95 more needed to win.

David Vick: Surely Roland-Jones should've been given the new ball? Creates havoc for Middlesex from the Pavilion End at Lord's.

  11. SA 57-0published at 10 overs

    Target 154

Ball charging in at 85mph, his five overs have only cost 18, which is far more economical than his two bowling partners. Smart fielding from captain Morgan. The South Africans were catching everything earlier, having put down six chances in the previous game at Southampton. England were 20-6 after five overs, I have to keep reminding myself of that.

The odds on England defending 153 are pretty much zero, but for South Africa to get off to a flyer is not what they wanted. Let's hope it's a wake-up call.

Well Scott, since the first match at Lord's in 1972, a fine year, they have won 23 matches and are about to lose their 26th. Fifty up already for the South Africans, Amla looking in commanding form with two more offside boundaries from Finn, the opener now with 130 runs in the series.

Scott Lennon‏: I have an unfounded theory that England's record is much poorer in the south than the north. Can someone confirm it?

All smiles on the South Africa balcony, they're set for their first victory in four ODI attempts at Lord's. De Kock clips Ball away for two to deep mid-wicket. Still strange to see Bairstow without the gloves, but he is assured in the field as he is in every other department. Maybe he can bowl as well?

South Africa will hope this sends a message to other teams in the Champions Trophy that they are getting some momentum. They will be dangerous in this tournament.

Steven Finn back for his first ODI spell since taking 2-35 against West Indies in march and his opening delivery is unceremoniously pulled to the boundary by Amla, who becomes the fastest to 7,000 ODI runs, the 150th innings for the luxuriantly bearded 34-year-old.

  18. SA 36-0published at 6 overs

    Target 154

No boundaries this time as Ball restricts the batsmen. His three overs have conceded only 11 whereas Willey has gone for 24. Need a few wickets from somewhere though.

  20. SA 34-0published at 5 overs

    Target 154

By the fifth over of the England innings we had seen five wickets but there is no sign of one here, six boundaries for South Africa though and three wides. Beautiful stroke through mid-wicket from De Kock for four off Willey. If he gets going we could be done before the official interval at 14:30 BST!
