  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 29.5 overs

    Ball b Maharaj 7 (Eng 143-9)

Start the car. Jake Ball had just slapped Maharaj over extra cover with a little shuffle down the pitch and his ambition got the better of him there. Ball was down on one knee, trying to slog sweep, and Maharj just held the ball back a touch. Through the gate and the bails are off.

Here is Jonny Bairstow's dismissal - he arrived at the crease with England 15-3 and managed to get them to triple figures before eventually succumbing to Keshav Maharaj.

  3. drinks break

Drinks breakpublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

    Eng 137-8

Time for a drinks break - and both umpires have headed off the field. It's still dark over Lord's, the first spots of rain splodging onto the camera lenses, but there seems to be very, very faint blue skies over London.

  5. Eng 137-8published at 29 overs

    Rabada 8-1-33-4

Rabada continues and Toby Roland-Jones, both bravely and wisely, takes him on with a pull shot that drops into the deep. One bounce in front of Keshav Maharaj saves the batsman. Jake Ball then faces his first ball from Rabada, and sees it safely away into the off side.

  6. Postpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

That was a fine innings from Jonny Bairstow, who is only playing today as England have rested several players. He did well at Lord's against Ireland and he's backed it up today - in fact, he's one of only three players so far to get into double figures.

  7. Eng 134-8published at 28 overs

Here's Jake Ball, and he's nearly out to his third ball as Maharaj comes narrowly close to sneaking one through the gate. What do you do from here if you're England?

He was done a little bit there, it didn't turn much, it was a strange shot in the circumstances. We were talking about how he can get in the team, a cheeky 100 could have put the cat amongst the pigeons but a fifty, he will be annoyed because he has rather given that away.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 27.3 overs

Bairstow st de Kock b Maharaj 51 (Eng 134-8)

That is definitely out though - and it's Bairstow who has to go! Bairstow came charging out of his crease, presumably looking to launch Maharaj over the ropes. He's ended up looking a bit daft as his hoick with the bat misses, and Quinton de Kock has the bails off as quick as a flash.

  10. Not outpublished at 27.1 overs

Clipping the top of leg stump - it's umpire's call, so TRJ will bat on. AB looks wryly amused. Maharaj keeps his head down.

  11. South Africa reviewpublished at 27.1 overs

    Eng 133-7

Huge yelp from Maharaj as he strikes Toby Roland-Jones on the pad - and we're going upstairs. Maharaj and keeper Quinton de Kock were convinced of that...

A fifth fifty for Bairstow in one-day internationals and his third in his last four innings. His highest ODI score is an unbeaten 83.

  13. Eng 133-7published at 27 overs

    Bairstow 51, Roland-Jones 30

Ooft, Toby Roland-Jones. An on drive that a top order batsman would be proud of, and that's four. Rabada readjusts and bowls short, and Roland-Jones pulls out of a pull shot at the last second. There was plenty of hustle behind that one, and Rabada sticks with the short ball for the rest of the over.

Bairstow looks in good form. England have got to somehow find a way to get him in the side because he just never lets you down.

If you come out and play positively, once the ball starts to beat the fielders it can begin to look a different game. He's always at the bowlers, Bairstow.

  16. 50 runs

50 for Bairstowpublished at 25.3 overs

Spinner Keshav Maharaj is back as AB continues to shuffle his pack. And that's fifty for Bairstow! Down on one knee, sweeping hard to pick up a boundary and Bairstow raises his bat to the crowd. He's been in cracking touch and did well to keep his head while the rest of the batsmen collapsed.

  17. Postpublished at 13:05 British Summer Time 29 May 2017

Toby Roland-Jones, here, swinging his arms to maximum effect.

  18. Eng 124-7published at 25 overs

Here's Kasigo Rabada, presumably to clean things up quickly. A cracking leaping dive from JP Duminy cuts off a Bairstow drive, before the Yorkshire batsman guides an over pitched delivery down to the boundary. Some superb running then allows Bairstow and Roland-Jones to nab an extra three runs.
