South Africa's dressing room will be thinking they have let it slip.

England are up, the crowd is on their side.

South Africa have got two bowlers in although both can bat a bit. After that are three tailenders.

  2. SA 258-6published at 73 overs

Moeen Ali, who has bowled just four overs today despite his heroics at Lord's, into the attack.

The spinner has the trap set for the aggressive Chris Morris but the South African all-rounder refuses to take the bait.

  3. SA 257-6published at 72 overs

    Morris 10 Philander 15

Ben Stokes is the man to make things happen for England with the ball, but it is hard to build pressure on the new batsmen. His third delivery is a touch too wide and Chris Morris makes no mistake with a crisp drive.

South Africa did so well in the middle session. There is no doubt there has been something on offer for the bowlers.

South Africa had a platform and if they could have batted for 20 minutes after tea you felt anything near 400 with achievable and would have put them in a dominating position.

Now they have got to fight for the 300 mark.

Here's a clip of Ben Stokes' dismissal of Temba Bavuma. The South African won't want it anywhere near his carer highlights reel.

  6. SA 252-6published at 71 overs

Joe Root turns to spin and Liam Dawson. He bowls a tight line and only two singles off the over.

  7. SA 251-6published at 70 overs

Despite the two wickets, this hasn't been vintage stuff from Ben Stokes and he is leaking runs.

The second ball of his over is a full bunger which is driven for four by Vernon Philander. Stokes' fifth ball is overpitched and Chris Morris pierces the field to find the boundary.

Here's that feather off the gloves of Faf du Plessis which gave Ben Stokes his first wicket of the day - via a superb catch from Jonny Bairstow.

  10. SA 240-6published at 69 overs

While Ben Stokes is getting all the luck his Durham team-mate Mark Wood must have ran over a black cat on the way to Trent Bridge this morning.

Wood has put the ball in the right areas, and is causing problems with late swing, but remains wicketless so far.

I think he changed his mind.

He was brought forward by the length and was going to play then not and it was too late.

If you change your mind it gives you a real big problem because the ball is coming too quick.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 67.2 overs

    Bavuma c Bairstow b Stokes 20 (SA 235-6)

Terrible indecisiveness from Bavuma and it has cost him his wicket. He gets himself in a right mess with a delivery from Ben Stokes and changes his mind midway through the shot. He tried to pull out of the stroke and leave the ball, only for it to clip his bat leaving Jonny Bairstow with a routine catch.

Stokes has picked up two rather fortunate wickets. Not that his captain will be complaining.

  13. SA 235-5published at 67 overs

Another pull to the boundary from Bavuma, this time off Mark Wood. A few balls later and he is on the front foot and drives Wood through the covers. There's not much footwork from the diminutive South African but he is finding the boundary with ease.

Temba Bavuma has been pulling and hooking fairly confidently thus far. Here's a clip of one he steered to the boundary off Stuart Broad.

Kevin Ticehurst: Jonny Bairstow is slowly becoming our new Matt Prior. That catch was very Matt Prior esque. Sublime!!

Paul Lancashire: That's what Ben Stokes brings to this side - with bat and ball he just make things happen

Vernon Philander off the mark with a classy shot off the back foot which he caresses through point to the boundary.

With the penultimate ball of the over Ben Stokes angles the ball into Philander, who gets himself into a bit of mess but manages to dig the ball out.

Du Plessis reviewed it straight away, which suggests it came off his thigh pad. It's a great catch from Jonny Bairstow, a wonderful take. He did something similar at Lord's to dismiss Heino Kuhn.

  18. SA 222-5published at 65 overs

The crowd roar after a full-blooded drive from Temba Bavuma off Mark Wood is collected by Gary Ballance. The ball had already hit the turf, though.

Vernon Philander is the new man at the crease following the wicket of Du Plessis.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 63.4 overs

    Du Plessis c Bairstow b Stokes 19 (SA 220-5)

Ben Stokes sends a ball down leg which Faf du Plessis attempts to work off his hip to and England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow claims a fine catch diving to his left.

Umpire Paul Reiffel raises his finger. Du Plessis immediately asks for a review, but ultraedge shows the ball brushed the glove of the South Africa captain, and then deflected off the thigh pad into the gloves of Bairstow.

Du Plessis is on his way back to the pavilion.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Gary Ballance is doing something which really annoys me. He's got the pads on despite England not using a short leg for at least 30 minutes. He can't run properly. It doesn't take long to remove them and put them back on when you need them.
