  1. Eng 49-2published at 11 overs

Wayward again from Morris and Root cashes in. Four more to the total. That's really poor bowling.

Sweeper sent back to the cover boundary by Du Plessis. A battle won for England.

These two came together at 3-2 but have hit nine boundaries already including this one earlier.

This situation is when Joe Root is at his most dangerous.

    Ballance 16 Root 24

Short, wide and whacked for four.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis tells Morris to go and have a bowl after that misfield and Root capitalises.

You don't want to bowl there when it's swinging like this.

  4. Eng 39-2published at 10 overs

    Ballance 16 Root 20

The runs are flowing for England. We hear so much about them wanting to counter-attack from difficult positions. They've put away the bad balls in previous overs but in all fairness this should have been stopped by Chris Morris in the gully. He takes an age to get down to another thick edge from Ballance and the ball goes for four again.

I watched Ballance in the warm-up and he was so anxious to get his head and chest forward and into the ball.

  6. Eng 34-2published at 9 overs

    Ballance 12 Root 20

Much better from Gary Ballance. Last over he was still hanging back as he tried to drive but this time, despite not getting a big step, he gets his weight forward and punches for four.

That's poor from Morkel. He bowls on Ballance's hip and the batsman picks up another four. Morkel holds his hand up to apologise.

20 runs in the last two overs.

  7. Women's World Cup updatepublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

England have suffered a bit of wobble in their final group match of the Women's Cricket World Cup against the West Indies. From 47 without loss England have collapsed to 97-4 after 23 overs. Four of their big guns - Lauren Winfield (11), Tammy Beaumont (42), Sarah Taylor (0) and Nat Sciver (0) - are all back in the pavilion. Skipper Heather Knight (19*) is still there with Fran Wilson (2*). West Indies spinner Afy Fletcher has picked up 2-5.

Elsewhere, Australia are 120-2 at the halfway point against South Africa, India are 65-2 from 19 overs against New Zealand while Sri Lanka are 55-2 from 13 overs against Pakistan.

England are currently top of the points table and have already qualified for the semi-finals along with Austalia and South Africa. India and New Zealand are scrapping it out for the final place in the knockout stage.

  8. Eng 26-2published at 8 overs

    Ballance 4 Root 19

Panic? What panic? Root drives beautifully for four. The crowd purr.

Another four to the skipper but this one is risky, just flashing in the air beyond Chris Morris in the gully.

Yes, yes, yes Joe Root. That is what he wanted previously. A perfect back-foot drive goes to the rope.

    12 from the over.

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Gary Ballance now has 1,000 first-class runs in this English summer, at an average of 83.41. He's the third person to bring up that mark, after Kumar Sangakkara and Joe Denly.

  10. Eng 14-2published at 7 overs

    Ballance 0 Root 7

Both me and my colleague next to me just exhaled simultaneously as Gary Ballance gets off the mark with a four.

He tentatively came forward and got a thick outside edge and the ball runs down to wide third man. I'm not sure Ballance was aiming there. Morne Morkel knows it. A moral victory to the bowler.

And Alastair Cook wouldn't have even had chance to take his pads off before Keaton Jennings followed him a ball later. In all fairness there was nothing Jennings could do. It was one of those when you hope you're lucky enough to miss it.

  12. Eng 7-2published at 6 overs

Root's ability to make me feel calm is incredible. He simply knocks the ball into the off side and runs through for one. It really isn't that easy. Vernon Philander is on the top of his game. There was a bit of confusion and a review needed but here's how he dismissed Alastair Cook.

South Africa are pumped up. They recognise the opportunity. Faf du Plessis will bring some good tactics too, which Dean Elgar didn't in the first Test at Lord's.

The Trent Bridge crowd has gone from euphoric to funereal. Where once they were cheering James Anderson from the field, now there is silent worry, concern that every delivery might bring a wicket. After two wickets in two balls, Root's shot to get off the mark brought a huge cheer, as if the saviour had arrived.

  15. Eng 6-2published at 5 overs

    Morkel 1-4

Six wickets have fallen this morning for 32 runs. If a bowler was asked to pick the perfect conditions to bowl in England I think it would be just like this. A watchful Ballance can't get his first run.

  16. Eng 6-2published at 4.2 overs

"Roooooooot". The skipper clips three off his pads on his first delivery to get off the mark. Gary Ballance on strike now who is yet to face a ball. What a test for him. This is where he needs to show his mettle.

The perfect start for South Africa. Runs on the board are the crucial thing in this situation.

Two in two. A beauty from Morkel.

The quick angles one in from around the wicket and it nips away off the pitch. Keaton Jennings is forced into playing and the ball takes the outside edge and he's gone for the duck. The captain is in inside five overs.
