    England v West Indies

The men aren't the only England team playing today.

The women are already under way against the West Indies at Bristol in their last group game of the Women's World Cup.

Heather Knight's side's place in the last four is already assured but, perhaps importantly, a win would see them avoid a semi-final with Australia.

Signing autographs on the pavilion steps. One chap asked for at least four different things to be signed. The vice-captain was very patient.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Moeen bowled beautifully at Lord's - not many people get a 10-for in their career, never mine at Lord's. He's England's number one spinner. It's nonsensical to say Liam Dawson is England's best spinner.

Saturday at the Test. There was a fox and full hunt outside my hotel and streams of people making their way from Nottingham station to Trent Bridge. The pubs are so full that patrons are drinking on the pavement and the queue at the fast food restaurant on the corner is out of the door.

The bad news is there is a little bit of rain around this morning.

However, as it stands at Trent Bridge, the covers are off and I'm reliably informed by our cricket reporter come weatherman Stephan Shemilt that there is no sign of the wet stuff.

Hopefully we'll be able to start on time.

It was important to stick to our guns - Bairstow

If there was one England player who stood out yesterday it was Jonny Bairstow.

The Yorkshireman again showed his significant improvement with the gloves with a fine catch down the leg side.

The wicketkeeper said at the close England have "put themselves in with a chance in the morning".

    We'll see.

For those of you hard at work in the office yesterday here's pint sized TMS to sum up the day's play.

Faf du Plessis chose to bat under cloudy skies and, despite the loss of Dean Elgar, the tourists fought their way through to lunch one down.

South Africa then dominated the afternoon session with Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock putting on a partnership 113 in speedy time.

But in a spell after tea, England took four quick wickets and looked as though they could rattle through the lower order before an unbeaten battling stand of 74 between Vernon Philander and Chris Morris ultimately gave the Proteas the edge.

In the words of the wise Jonathan Agnew, "Joe Root asked for a captaincy test and he has got one".

South Africa frustrated England on day one with a few of the new skipper's decisions questioned.

South Africa start today on 309-6. Who can take the upper hand on a crucial day two?
