    Right that's all from us.

Have a read of Stephan Shemilt's report of the day's play. It sums up everything perfectly and features a typically opinionated Geoffrey.

That wicket button got quite a working over today. More of the same tomorrow?

Is there any way England can get back into this game?

I'll be back tomorrow at 10:30 BST. See you then.

  2. 'England a batter light'published at 19:08 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I said it before the first Test at Lord's England are a batter light. You don't need six bowling options. This is the kind of team you pick after winning test match after test match. You have three all-rounders in Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow so pack the batting. All the players from Joe Root down will give you chances. England lost eight Tests last year. They need to pack the batting. They are not good enough or winning enough games to go with that line up.

Bairdy: Joe Root learning quickly that this captaincy lark ain't as easy as it's made out to be.

Andrew Beaumont: Crime to play more than five bowlers, depressingly defensive, Bairstow is not a 5; Ballance and Dawson are not test class

Bob Hawkins: I used to moan about Kevin Pietersen & his 'I only have one way to play'...now we've got a whole team doing it

  4. 'I can't see anything but a South Africa win from here'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

A lot of England's players look like they are premeditating their shots. The best way is to watch the ball and react. Not enough of them want to trust their technique. If that's the way you play you will lose Test matches. They allow teams back into the match.

Everything went Root's way at Lord's but his team have put England on the back foot. I can't see anything but a South Africa win from here. He will be challenged as an England captain in the next 24 hours that's for sure.

And South Africa battled their way to the close for the loss of just one wicket.

Dean Elgar is unbeaten on 38 and Amla 23 as the Proteas built a lead of 205 and put themselves well in command of this second Test.

I worry about the mentality of the Test batting because as soon as the things get difficult - it swings around or spins - they play aggressively.

The players didn't read the situations. Morne Morkel was coming to the end of the spell, and Joe Root plays the big shot. He has to better at reading the situation. I love attacking cricket but not in Test match cricket all the time. I don't think they trust their games to survive for a long time.

England didn't do the hard yards to get themselves in a good position to capitalise.

But Root was out with the score on 143 and from there England collapsed to 205 all out with a mix of poor shots and good bowling.

That gave South Africa a first innings lead of 130.

Joe Root then batted better than any player on either side racing his way to 78 from 76 balls.

He was ably helped by Gary Ballance who made 27 in the pairs' partnership of 83.

But South Africa started brilliantly through Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander and had England 3-2 in no time with both openers back in the hutch.

The day actually started perfectly for England with James Anderson quickly taking the four remaining South African wickets to finish with 5 for 72 as South Africa were all out for 335.

Interesting quotes from James Anderson there.

England are indeed in a tricky position.

Let's have a look at how that's happened.

  12. 'Not a great day for us'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

England James Anderson on Test Match Special: "We are in a tricky position. It was not a great day for us. We did well to bowl them out for 350 but didn't get it right with the bat.

"We are up against it but we will dust ourselves down and try to get back in the game. They batted well in the final session. Elgar and Amla are world class players.

"The batters have been fantastic over the previous months and you are going to have days like this, especially with a young side. You just have to keep them to a minimum.

"Joe Root was fantastic and played a great counter attacking knock when we were struggling. The first Test was plain sailing for him as captain but it's a real test here."

  13. Postpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

South Africa's Chris Morris speaking to Sky Sports: "It has been an excellent day of cricket for us. The guys showed guts and fought hard at the end to get to the close. We are pretty chuffed.

"Vernon and Morne were excellent this morning. The key is to keep asking the right questions.

"I was struggling with the swing but Faf said 'just come in and bowl fast' and it worked for me."

South Africa's batsmen started the day at the crease and end it at the crease but it is very much their day.

    15 wickets have fallen today.

    It has been exciting stuff.

You have to say South Africa are back in this series. It's the day the series came alive. A contest is on now.

    Elgar 38 Amla 23

And that is that. Very little threat from Dawson to end the day.

South Africa close day two 205 runs ahead of England.

The best day the tourists have had in this series by far.

Isaac Christopher‏: How long do we persist with Mark Wood because he's quick and had a good Ashes series? One wicket out of 31 in this series so far.

Karen‏: Have England given up? Not a very good performance by them so far.

John Hamilton: Swann feels sorry for the bolwers-theyr'e tired!!! A load of tosh-some commentators are too close to their mates on the pitch.

    South Africa lead by 205

Elgar already has a nasty bruise on the arm but is going to carry on.

He's clearly in pain as his arm comes straight off the bat after playing a forward defensive. The opener shakes it out to fight the pain.

I think he's got the right idea here. Elgar lets the rest of Stokes' over go by.

We'll have one more over and it will be bowled by Liam Dawson...

    SA 75-1published at 20.1 overs

    Elgar 38 Amla 23

There's not long to go until the close and we're going to have a pause which will eat into more time.

I think Dean Elgar is genuinely in pain here as a ball from Stokes gets through and hits him on the back forearm.

    Out comes the magic spray.
