Stokes c De Kock b Maharaj 0 (Eng 168-5)
A delivery from Keshav Maharaj finds the inside edge of Ben Stokes' bat and ballons up off his pad. Quinton de Kock juggles the ball before clinging on to the catch. Stokes trudges slowly back to the pavilion, waiting for the third umpire to decide whether the catch has been taken off the helmet.
it is a clean catch, though, and a glum-faced Stokes is out for a duck.

It's been a funny innings from Bairstow. He hasn't held back but there's been a lot of edges. But he's still there and scoring runs.
Bairstow 45 Stokes 0
Jonny Bairstow has taken on the lead role here. Ben Stokes happy for him to keep the strike. The England wicketkeeper slightly miscues a shot as he lifts the penultimate ball over the top but it trickles away for four. Good intent.
Here's the first of Vernon Philander's misfields....
South Africa turn to spin and Keshav Maharaj is into the attack. Vernon Philander with another misfield allows Jonny Bairstow to pinch the strike off the last ball of the over.
The final ball of Vernon Philander's over races away after a thick outside edge off Jonny Bairstow's bat. Temba Bavuma gets himself in a tangle at backward point as he loses his footing which allows England to run three.
Faf du Plessis sticking with his experienced bowlers. Vernon Philander back into the attack after a scattergun spell from Duanne Olivier. And his third ball strikes Bairstow high on the leg and South Africa decide to review it....
There was an inside edge from Bairstow's bat, though, and South Africa lose one of their reviews.
Bairstow 37 Stokes 0
Vernon Philander, perhaps a little stiff from his early spell, unable to get down to stop a drive from Jonny Bairstow and after the misfield the ball snakes its way to the boundary rope much to the crowd's joy. Faf du Plessis not quite so amused.
A few balls later Bairstow pierces the field with a fine drive for four. England 175 behind now.

Rob Davidson: Steve Smith converts well on flat tracks. He can't play seam and swing the way Root does.
Here's a clip of the dismissal of Joe Root. The look on Morne Morkel's face tells you everything you need to know.

It's noticeable that South Africa look more focused, hungry and have direction. That's all down to Faf du Plessis.
Bairstow 28 Stokes 0
Morne Morkel kept on for another over after removing Joe Root. His first ball is a wide one which Jonny Bairstow squirts through gully for four. The England wicketkeeper has a fortunate escape with the next as he almost chops the second ball of the over on to his stumps.
Duanne Olivier not so quite threatening so far. Here's a clip of Jonny Bairstow crashing him through the covers.
Duanne Olivier struggling for some consistency with his line. Bairstow and Stokes are not taking too many risks though and only a single to the former is taken off the over.

Joe Root was beyond furious with himself at getting out. After De Kock took the catch, he rolled it towards the umpire and, for a moment, it looked like Root would give it a whack. Instead he settled for a thump of the pad and a blast at the ground. He could barely bring himself to lift his bat to acknowledge the applause of the crowd.

Francis Edwards: The reason why Steve Smith is number one is that he converts well. Root isn't great at that. Still, both absolute champions.

In the context of what we've seen today, that is a remarkable innings. What a good decision it was from Du Plessis to keep his tiring fast bowler on for one more over.

It's hard to be critical but England could have read the situation better - that was clearly going to be Morne Morkel's final over.
Morne Morkel has his tail up. He greets Ben Stokes with a couple of bouncers. Stokes dodges and weaves out the way then the Durham all-rounder leaves the final two ball of the over.
