  1. Interval- Eng 183-6published at 42 overs

    Moeen 14 Dawson 2

All-rounder Chris Morris bowls the final over before the tea interval but he is a little wayward with the ball and tests neither Moeen Ali nor Liam Dawson. It's been a very tough session for England.

  5. Eng 179-6published at 41 overs

    Moeen 10 Dawson 1

Liam Dawson the new man and he is off the mark straight away with a punch through the covers. England's spin double act need to come together and make a significant contribution with the bat now. South Africa right on top here. The tea break can't come too soon.

It's pitched middle and off and beaten the outside edge. Bairstow couldn't believe it! England are in dire straits. On a swinging day, the spinners have come to the party.

Maharaj puts good revs on the ball. You can't begrudge him success when he's trying to spin the ball like that and playing to beat the outside edge.

    Bairstow b Maharaj 45 (Eng 177-6)

Our experts were of the opinion that Jonny Bairstow had lived something of a charmed life in this innings. But it's a piece of genuine quality spin bowling which accounts for his dismissal. The Yorkshireman plays straight but he is deceived in the flight and the ball dips in and turns ever so slightly to knock off the bail of his off stump.

  9. Eng 177-5published at 40 overs

Vernon Philander with a few tempters outside off stump but Moeen Ali refuses to nibble at them. Then off the penultimate ball of the over the Worcestershire man rocks on the back foot and punches a glorious shot through the covers. Quite possibly the shot of the day.

Jonny Bairstow is batting as though he knows there's a ball with his name on it so he's going to score as many as he can before then.
