Broad lbw Broad 0 (Eng 199-8)

Yep that would have knocked leg stump out of the ground.

England in trouble. Chris Morris is on a hat-trick.

Joe Root hides his face with his cap. England still trail by 136.

  2. Umpire reviewpublished at 47.2 overs

Full and straight from Morris first up to Broad. The ball whacks into the pads. Umpire says no. South Africa call for a review.

That was a definite plan from South Africa. Faf Du Plessis put himself at short cover point just before that ball was delivered. They are over the moon with that. A great field placing.

  4. wicket

    Moeen c Du Plessis b Morris 18 (Eng 199-7)

    Moeen, Moeen, Moeen.

That's a frustrating dismissal. The England batsman might have been expecting another bouncer but Morris pitches the ball up and Moeen drives straight to Faf du Plessis at point.

Du Plessis had just put himself there and he and bowler are delighted.

  5. Eng 199-6published at 47 overs

    Moeen 18 Dawson 13

Good from Liam Dawson. He's looking positive against the left-arm spin of Maharaj and comes down the pitch to push the ball into the off side. That forces Maharaj to change his line and the England man sweeps for four on the next ball.

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

Joe Root looked a class above everyone else. He played beautifully from the get-go. He transferred the pressure back to South Africa. He picks up length so well, he's an outstanding batter. The other batters will be in the dressing room wondering if he was batting on the same wicket. I used to feel like that when batting with Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers.

  7. Eng 195-6published at 46 overs

    Moeen 18 Dawson 9

Chris Morris has gone for 31 runs from five overs and is yet to take a wicket so it is perhaps a surprise to see him first up after tea. It looks like South Africa are going to go after Moeen as the quick bangs in a series of bouncers. For now Mo is swaying out of the way and he picks up a couple when the bowler goes for the pitched up ball after the bouncer.

    England trail by 142

Tight bowling from Maharaj. He's got two wickets already, an impressive effort on a day two pitch in these conditions. Just the one from the over.

  9. Eng 192-6published at 44 overs

    Moeen 15 Dawson 9

Insult added to injury. Dawson plays a forward defensive and the ball runs through the slips for four to third man.

I still can't understand that review. I was sure there was a noise. My dad always used to tell me my wrists clicked when I played a cut shot as a kid, creating the impression I was caught behind. Maybe there was something similar with Dawson?

The crowd shouldn't boo. There was a noise of some sort. He was given out in good faith and this is why we have the review system.

  11. Umpire review - Not outpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

Crikey he's missed that by about a foot. That's bizarre. I was sure I heard a noise and bowler Chris Morris just ran through as if it was a regulation edge.

Liam Dawson looked as innocent as a choir boy. I thought I heard a noise.

  13. Umpire reviewpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

Is Dawson gone? He's been given out caught behind but has reviewed immediately.

    I heard a noise.

  14. Eng 186-6published at 43 overs

    Moeen 15 Dawson 3

Moeen escapes the curse of the first ball after the break by picking up a single.

That brings Liam Dawson on strike who has only faced a handful of deliveries so far.

It has been a little bit forgotten but Dawson made 66 not out against India on debut in the winter when England suffered an innings defeat. England need him to get that again here.

    The players are back out.

Maharaj to bowl to Moeen. We had a wicket first ball after tea yesterday...

So Geoffrey says England are in trouble.

Here are the wickets to fall in the afternoon session.

England are rattling along at over four runs per but now they're six wickets down and still 151 runs behind.

I tend to agree. That spells trouble to me.

Right, thanks to Geoffrey Boycott for that. I'm off for a quick tea break of my my own and will leave you in the safe hands of Matt Henry.

Collectively, England's top four have been a shambles for far, far too long. One less batsman than is ideal in the top six, huge worries at two and three and a keeper batting too highly. It's bordering on shambolic considering how painstakingly planned the national side seems to be. The fact we are in this shape four months before the Ashes is extremely worrying.

Here's the dismissal of Jonny Bairstow shortly before tea. A peach of a delivery from spinner Keshav Maharaj to remove the England wicketkeeper.
