Howard Horner: Every time Temba Bavuma fields, his sunglasses fall off. He needs to invest in the glasses chain my school librarian had.

Glen Young: Those South African sweaters look poor quality. Bavuma's is in a right state.

It sounds like Temba is having a bad clothes day.

A straight drive from Root takes a deflection from Duanne Olivier and hammers into the stumps at the opposite end, but Jennings had his bat safely home. Root practices his drive as he angles a delivery all along the ground towards a waiting gully, and that's a maiden.

This is an opportunity for Jennings to prove to Joe Root that he's got the temperament and he's got a game. It's always nice to score runs when the captain is at the other end.

    Root 13, Jennings 16

Maharaj wheels his way through another over, Root pressing forward in defence to a succession of full deliveries. A quick single brings Jennings on strike, and the opener shuffles forward to block the ball away.

Jennings is currently 16 not out from 45 deliveries, and, say it quietly, he's starting to find a bit of rhythm. Here he striking Maharaj for a boundary.

Very good, Dan. That's when you know the cricket season is in full swing, when Ian Bell's name crops up as the answer to any sort of batting problem. Olivier offers up some width and Jennings frees his arms, carving the ball through the off side and away to the boundary. He plays with soft ends to guide the ball towards the gully before he wanders off and practices his forward defensive. Root, at the other end, does a bit more thumping at the ground with his bat.

Dan Gee: The year is 2053. Cricket is played indoors and Haseeb Hameed is commentating on TMS. People are still calling for Ian Bell to be brought back.

Maharaj has a half-hearted appeal against Root as he's struck on the pad, but Aleem Dar shakes his magnificently bearded head. There was a healthy inside edge on that. A madien.

The podium for the post-match presentation is kept behind the media centre. I like how it's protected by ECB tape.

Ian Bell's top score in first-class cricket this season, incidentally, is 99 He's got an average of 27.58 with three half-centuries. I'm gonna say now is not the time to recall him. A change of bowling brings Duanne Olivier into the attack, and Root goes hard a cut shot, and again the ball lifts through on its way to the keeper. There are ooh's and aah's behind the stumps, but Root recovers to whip the ball off his toes for a leisurely single. Olivier, walking a tad gingerly as he makes his way back to his mark, bangs in a delivery that Jennings ignores.

The top order has struggled since the departure of Bell and Pietersen. Now is the time to recall Bell in time for the Ashes. He could even do a job at opener if required.

    Root 11, Jennings 12

Maharaj will continue, solitary slip in place, and Root whips him away for four! What a shot that was. Root was in total control, bending the back knee and sweeping, the ball rolling along the ground all the way to the boundary. Maharaj straightens up his line and Root defends, head bent low, before Root takes a quick single and Jennings, hanging back a little, has to charge forward to reach safety.

I'm in front of the pavilion, sitting behind two chaps who have spotted the Cookie Monster in the stand away to our right. A gaze through the binoculars. "I wouldn't want to be sitting behind him".

A nice cover drive from Joe Root brings him a couple of runs as Morne Morkel enters his eighth spell. A drop and run brings Root another single, and Jennings, facing the final ball of the over, and he gets forward to play a little tap into the off side.

That's one of my favourite ever terrible reviews. Just awful. It wouldn't have hit a fifth stump! Jennings then promptly gets down on one knee and sweeps for four, as Duanne Olivier goes sliding into the boundary rope.

South Africa have reviewed this. Keaton Jennings kicks one away. No shot played, the ball spinning sharply back into him from over the wicket.

  20. Eng 34-2published at 13.4 overs

    Jennings 8, Root 3

Time for some spin from Maharaj. The left-armer comes round the wicket and Joe Root is measured in defence - making sure to get his bat right out in front of his pad. When the bowler strays, a single is taken to square leg.
