Hameed, incidentally, is averaging 18.33 in Championship cricket this season. He hasn't made a 50 in this season.Root solidly blocks before an outside edge goes tumbling away for a single. Jennings has a little nibble at a peach of a Morkel delivery, away swing taking the ball past the outside edge. Another good over from the big fella.

Haseeb Hameed was caught at slip by Jimmy Adams

Haseeb Hameed - perhaps Keaton Jennings' closest rival for a spot in the team for the next Test against West Indies - has gone cheaply in Lancashire's County Championship match against Hampshire.

He batted for exactly one hour, making six off 39 balls before being removed by fast bowler Fidel Edwards.

You can follow all of today's county action here. Yorkshire, by the way, are 51-6 against Essex.

Here's Joe Root, who must be getting a bit sick of coming in with England two down for not a lot. He prods away at the pitch, doing a bit of gardening to keep Kagiso Rabada waiting, before he defends his first ball back to the bowler. Up in the England dressing room, Tom Westley watches his dismissal on a laptop, before shaking his head in annoyance. Root gets off the mark with a tight single, with Bavuma again shying at the stumps and seeing the ball flick just wide of the stumps.

That was a mental error from Westley. He just hit the boundary, saw one full and didn't get the balance on the front foot properly.

Westley c sub (Markham) b Morkel (Eng 30-2)

What Westley's done there is play the exact same shot that Cook has just played, with the exact same result. The number three had just played a glorious back foot drive for four and then tried to repeat the shot. Morkel might have just speared that one a bit fuller, and Westley obliged with the drive, where the sub fielder at gully took a mirror image catch to Elgar earlier in the innings. Gone.

Jennings taps the ball to Bavuma and taeks off for a run, and the resulting throw just misses the stumps! That would have been close - Jennings was sliding his bat in and it was raised off the ground, and I suspect that had that hit, he'd have been gone. Westley defends, and defends stoutly, to pick up another single, and Jennings leaves a tempter outside off stump.

Here's what Cook will be ruminating on - this loose dismissal to end Cook's contribution to this series.

  10. Eng 24-1published at 9 overs

    Westley 4, Jennings 6

Alastair Cook is having a tiny rummage up his nose up in the dressing room. Root, sat next to him, notices the camera is on them and thwacks him on the thigh to warn him. Cook looks thoroughly unimpressed with himself. On the pitch, Morkel beats Westley with a stunner that keeps low, with the ball bouncing before reaches Quinton de Kock's tiptoes. That's just what you want to see as a batsman. Westley defends, Morkel attempts to kick it onto the stumps and ends up with the ball cannoning into his shins. Ouch. That might have added a bit of extra oomph to the bouncer that comes Westley's way.

    Rabada 4-2-0-6

It's windy out there - Rabada has to abort his run up as a gust of wind blows the bails off the stumps. That's four for Jennings - full, onto the pads, and Jennings picks up a boundary with a flick of the wrist and a miniature step forward.

That was the 12th time Morkel has dismissed Alastair Cook, which is some record. The same man greets Tom Westley to the crease with a bouncer, which the Essex man ducks, before he chucks a big drive down that flies away for four. It was full from Morkel and Westley was aiming down the ground, but again, there was a healthy enough edge on it to take it to the third man boundary.

Good delivery again by Morkel. It was bowled a bit fuller and lured Cook into the drive. There's something for South Africa to bite on now.

    Cook c de Bruyn b Morkel 10 (Eng 16-1)

That's out! That's a rubbish shot, truth be told from Cook. It was a good length delivery from Morkel and Cook shaped to drive, but instead the ball slipped off the bat and straight to gully, where De Bruyn took a good catch. That was a loose shot from Cook and it has cost him. South Africa have the early breakthrough.

Jennings seems to always have a few lives. Even his 100 against India is now known as the 100 in which he was dropped on 0. He can't say he's been a bit unlucky, he's had a few chances to get things right. He will be feeling the heat. You have to capitalise on those lives.

Elgar stands, hands on hips, glaring at the ground as Jennings gets off the mark with a drive through mid-wicket. He gets a nice cheer from the Old Trafford as he and Cook jog through for a second run. That drop seems to have forced Jennings to adjust his stance and he leaves an almost identical delivery to the one that took the edge, the ball nipping through to the keeper.

  20. dropped catch

Jennings dropped on 0published at 5.2 overs

    Eng 14-0

Edgy from Jennings, pushing forwards, but the ball rolls all along the ground towards the slips. Oh, and now he edges up to the slips - and Dean Elgar drops it at third slip! Is that the luck he needs? It was a defensive push forwards and the ball took the outside edge nicely and Elgar, diving to his left, spilled it! Elgar was in the air but he got two hands to it, and that should have been taken.
