Marc Sepetowski: Cook ... the best batsman this country has ever produced. Not sure thats still up for debate is it?

Ian Clarke: Would love to see Cook break his mentor Gooch's highest Test score of 333 or highest ever 364 by Hutton.

Freddy 'MC' Clode: This is like when I, as an 18-year-old, played for our under 11s, scoring a 106* - a great feeling but hardly worth celebrating.

A remarkable Cook stat has just been mentioned - he's now the leading Test run scorer in England. He's made so many centuries abroad that you can forget how prolific he is in English conditions. He wallops a floaty Roston Chase delivery for two before Root prods away the final delivery of the over.

Cook has never looked flustered. He just went about his business in his usual, quiet manner. Apart from the first 40 minutes of play, when West Indies were looking in the game, it's been all England. Even the West Indies' body language is not looking good.

    Cook 100, Root 118

Really nice to see Root with a massive grin on his face as Cook reached three figures. In fact, Root's celebration was more emphatic for Cook's century than it was for his own. Up in hospitality, Graham Onions, sporting a fetching pair of pink sunglasses, has a chat with Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell, as Cook sees out a Jason Holder maiden.

I don't think Alastair Cook minds this pink ball all that much. It's been a steady as she goes innings, nothing flamboyant but he's done it. He loves churning out these centuries.

And there it is! Alastair Cook raises his arms high above his head and acknowledges the crowd, before cupping his glove to his ear in that familiar celebration. He hugs Joe Root before raising his bat to the crowd again. A proper Cook-style hundred - it's not been flashy but he's stood firm and ground out a ton.

  7. Eng 245-2published at 59.5 overs

This ball is getting a touch harder to see as Root cover drives it to the boundary. It's easy enough to follow when it comes out of the bowler's hand, and when the batsman connects, but you can lose it as it rolls along the turf. Root then gamely jogs a single to bring Cook on strike, and Holder and Chase respond by shoving their field up under his nose. Cook looks as unruffled as you'd expect as he and Root exchange singles, taking him to 99.

The West Indies have such a rich history of cricket, and now you have a team that can barely win a Test match. They don't look particularly competitive, they haven't won a series against England since 2008-09. The bigger issue is, the West Indies cricketers seem to have lost the basics, as far as the disciplines of Test cricket go.

  9. Eng 238-2published at 59 overs

    Cook 98, Root 112

Jason Holder has a slightly lumbering walk as he makes his way back to his mark, waving his arm around a tad gingerly as he rearranges his field. Cook looks around, taking everything in, and lets a delivery that's pushed across him go through to the keeper. A chop through third man brings about an easy single, before Root pulls a waist high short ball down towards third man. A no ball extends the over, Cook watchful as the ball bounces over the stumps.

Some width from Chase is pounced on by Cook, and he carves it away for four. Ooh, and he plays the same shot three balls later for yet another boundary! That's just poor bowling, I'm afraid. Short, wide, in the slot, and Cook's been able to cut them both away with ease. That takes him to 97.

Strong cake work from Edgbaston here.

  13. Eng 224-2published at 57 overs

Jason Holder is back, and he's got some very heavy strapping on his right arm. He's holding his wrist as he walks back to his mark, flexing his fingers, and he looks in a touch of discomfort. Root jogs on the spot as Holder gets one to swing away from the batsman, but Root's eye is firmly in now. He hoicks his bat high above his head before a leggy delivery is pinged away to the boundary.

    Cook 87, Root 105

Roston Chase will get us going after tea (supper? Who knows) and Cook pushes gently into the covers for a single. Root takes a step back into his crease and whips the ball off his pads for another one. A leisurely start to the evening.

Right. Here come the batsmen, Alastair Cook puffing his cheeks out, as West Indies wait beyond the boundary for them. The lights are on but there's still bright blue sky above Edgbaston, although it's gone a bit murky out in the middle.

Turns out it doesn't matter what colour the ball is - Joe Root can still work it around for a century. Here's the moment he got to three figures.

  20. Eng 215-2published at 55 overs

    Cook 85, Root 103

I was just about to say that Alastair Cook is content in seeing off the session with a maiden in the final over, but he clips the final ball through mid-wicket, dissecting the field, for four.

It has been England's session in every single way. Will the lights and evening session change that in any way?
