Just cooling down now. It was a mistake to come out without a jacket. One way to keep warm is to have your own game - this one is going on behind the Stanley Barnes Stand. Yes, there really is an umpire with a white coat and Panama hat.

    Cook 123, Root 134

Jason Holder has gone off the field, with a little stumble over the boundary rope as he goes. He was struggling with his right arm when they came back out from tea - it was strapped up and, once or twice, Holder had hold of his wrist as he waggled his fingers.

Miguel Cummins continues and gets Cook to have a slice at a wide delivery that stays low, but Cook straight drives very nicely past Cummins for a handful. A fine slide down on the ropes stopped that delivery being four, actually, Kraigg Brathwaite knocking the ball back in and saving a run.

Chris Etheridge: Cook and Root seem to be having a very enjoyable evening net session. When does the Test start again?

David Merson: Stoneman and Westley will be ruing the lost opportunity.

Stoney: This exemplifies our batting problems perfectly. We have two world-class acts and the rest just make up the numbers.

That's a fine bit of run saving at mid-wicket as a fielder goes tumbling to his left to cut off a ping off the pads from Cook. The same man then gets beaten outside off stump, just pushing at a nice delivery from Alzarri Joseph that holds its line. The two then run an easy three as Cook pushes through the covers and lets the speedy outfield do most of the hard work.

Robbers chasing the cops now, broken up by the stewards. Mr Blobby leads a conga. I think Superman is in there. Maybe the Teletubbies too.

I'm all for getting rid of a nightwatchman anyway. What does it become in these games? Eveningwatchman doesn't quite have the same ring to it. Umpire Erasmus has a chat with Cook at the non-striker's end as Root shovels a delivery off his pads and across the field for another simple single.

Aidan Watson: I can't remember the last time Cook has been fed so many cut shots! Holder has not been helped by his bowlers, including himself.

Wajid Sadiq: So does this day/night cricket match nullify the need of a nightwatchman?

Alastair Cook bottom edges a delivery that bobbles towards the slips, but it's all along the ground, and the solitary slip does a rather ungainly dive to stop the ball sneaking off anywhere. A single brings Root on strike, and he does well to jab his bat down on a toe-crunching yorker from Alzarri Joseph.

Meanwhile, over at Headingley, Adam Lyth has just reached a T20 century for Yorkshire from 50 deliveries. Top boshing.

Here's the moment Alastair Cook reached his 31st Test century.

  10. Eng 272-2published at 68 overs

    Cook 114, Root 130

Cummins continues, and Cook hops on to the back foot and slaps it down towards the third man boundary, but the fielder cuts it off. Root then plays and misses at a tempter outside off stump, the ball whizzing past his attempted push forward, and Cummins blows out his cheeks as the keeper snaffles up the ball.

It's gone very quiet out in the middle, so the crowd are making their own fun. Mr Blobby is currently leading a conga line, along with Superman and Gandalf. There's a perfectly normal sentence to be typing at 19:47 on a Thursday night. Cook watches two deliveries go past his stumps, the ball reaching the keeper at about ankle height, and that's a maiden.

Cops and robbers in the Hollies Stand. The fancy dress cons are being chased by their police counterparts. Down one set of stairs, along the front, up another flight, all to a big cheer. I thought it would be rowdier in there today - now it's warming up.

  14. Eng 270-2published at 66 overs

    Cook 113, Root 129

There's one long strip of sunlight still hitting the Edgbaston outfield as Miguel Cummins gets his hands on the ball. This is now the highest third wicket partnership at Edgbaston by any country, beating the 227 that Alec Stewart and Robin Smith put on against Pakistan in 1992. This pair have, as it stands, put on 228, and Cook adds another one to the total as he gets down low and shovels a single away.

    Joseph 11-1-59-0

That's not a bad crowd for the first day-night Test in England. Alzarri Joseph is back into the attack, and he's summarily late cut to the boundary by Cook. Short, wide, no pace, and just asking for Cook to hit it. The same man then lazily, almost effortlessly, works a delivery off his pads for a languid two.

The official attendance is 21,649, so that's not a million miles away from the capacity of a smidge under 24,000. It's not particularly dark - I reckon we'd still be playing even without the floodlights. Spirits in the crowd? Just coming to the boil.

  18. Eng 260-2published at 64 overs

    Cook 105, Root 127

Roston Chase has his hands on his hips as Cook knocks away a quick single, a fielder comes charging in - and doesn't even bother to release the ball as England jog through. It does have that sort of feeling, a lack of energy creeping in to West Indies' game. It feels so very easy for the batsmen at the minute. Cook and Root keep working away the singles, taking five from the over.

    Andrew Samson

This is Cook's second century at Edgbaston and his sixth against West Indies, which equals the record for most against them for an England player - shared with Colin Cowdrey, Allan Lamb and Andrew Strauss.

  20. Eng 255-2published at 63 overs

Four for Root, sunlight still hitting the Edgbaston wicket as the England skipper takes a step forwards and cover drives away to the ropes. Jason Holder has a world weary look on his face but he spears in a fine yorker that Root jabs his bat onto and ends up toe-ending the ball into his pads. He stares suspiciously at his bat before shaking his head and grinning up at Cook.
