I don't understand why you wouldn't take the new ball and give it to Kemar Roach, who has just bowled the best spell of the day. That is bonkers.

Ooh, now. We're not going to take the new ball Kemar Roach was jogging in to take, and he's been told to go back to his position by his captain, Jason Holder. A change of ends, maybe, for Roach with the new ball?

  3. Eng 298-3published at 80 overs

Right. Kraigg Brathwaite gets through his over in the blink of an eye, and on comes the third official with the new ball. This is what we've been waiting for, really. What will the new ball do under the lights?

David Beckett: Malan is in a no-win situation as whatever he does will be judged against the relatively poor bowling attack and flat pitch.

Chris Rix: Mad to think Cooky has batted all day for 120 and Adam Lyth has just got 160 in an hour! What a sport!

  5. Eng 297-3published at 79 overs

    Malan 7, Cook 126

The Hollies Stand is in fine voice, although there's a couple of empty seats around as people head home. The ones who have stayed have blankets across their knees, and applaud politely as Malan lets a thick outside edge go running down to the boundary. The ball is more than a little scuffed now as it crashes into the rope, and Roach gives it a quick brush against his trousers. We're just an over away from the new ball.

England have to give Malan another chance but if they're thinking of Hales at number five, then they're going to have to give him at least one of these Tests.

  7. Eng 292-3published at 78 overs

We're only a few overs away from the new ball, so Brathwaite fires through his third over. The white kits are looking a bit glow in the dark now, underneath the harsh lights of the stadium. Just a solitary run from that over.

Root is a master. Get out before the end of play to test Malan. It also avoids the disappointment of watching him walk into the second day with a ton and scoring about eight runs.

    Cook 124, Malan 3

Ooft! That's one way to welcome your opponent to the crease as Kemar Roach whizzes down a short ball and Malan has to pull out some evasive action, bending his knees and slanting his head to the side to let the ball bounce through to the keeper. Malan defends the rest of the over, bat straight, his cable knit jumper glowing under the floodlights. It's got fairly dark at Edgbaston now, the sky a purpley-blue sort of colour as the lights really kick in.

I wouldn't say it was easy but it was definitely a chance. Stokes would have grabbed it.

  11. dropped catch

Malan dropped on 2published at 76 overs

    Eng 291-4

Brathwaite will continue, tossing the ball up into Malan's eyeline, but Malan's not rising to the bait. He plonks successive deliveries away before having a proper swipe at a short ball, and ooh, is that a drop? Malan went with hard hands, trying to cut past the keeper, and the ball flew fast off the outside edge and straight through the hands of slip! Difficult chance but Dowrich has a look of annoyance on his face.

I'm not totally convinced by the pink ball but it's fantastic coming home from work, putting the babies to bed and still being able to watch Test match cricket live!

    Roach 15-4-52-2

Dawid Malan has spent a fair few hours up in the dressing room, and now he's at the crease with six overs to go before the new ball. He'll have to stay sharp. He gets off the mark with a push back down the wicket. Kemar Roach, meanwhile, wanders back to his fielding position, miming Malan's forward defensive and, presumably, looking for a way to get through it.

It was a straight ball, there was no reason for him to miss it. He just got a bit casual and his footwork was stuck on the crease. We all do it, it's human nature. I'm not being critical, he's played nicely - he's had a net.

    Root b Roach 136 (Eng 287-3)

A wicket! Full and straight has done the trick for the West Indies. Kemar Roach had just been brought back and it's taken him two balls to get rid of the England captain, Root angling a drive at the ball and ending up getting bowled through the gate. He leaves the field to a wonderful ovation from the Edgbaston crowd.

Mike Green: Some of the West Indian greats must be wondering how this team has slumped to such a lowly low.

  17. Eng 287-2published at 74 overs

    Cook 123, Root 136

Kraigg Brathwaite, the opening batsman, is going to have a bowl. Yup, we've reached that stage of the day. Ooh, and his first ball is a loopy, full bit of rubbish that Root swipes for one, and then looks irked that he didn't give it some more treatment. Brathwaite comes skipping in, and then has to stop, because captain Jason Holder is still setting the field. Dearie me. Still, it's an over that's only cost a single.

Spare a thought for Dawid Malan, sitting there watching two of England's best players scoring easily. He'll be thinking that he's been there for hours and he could end up coming out for the new ball.

  20. drinks break

    Eng 286-2published at 73 overs

    Joseph 15-2-65-0

Root whips his hand off the bat as he prods a Joseph delivery down to the ground, before he and Cook go haring through for a single. That's cracking running. Cook then has a little dabble at an off stump delivery before drinks are brought out. Pleasingly, one umpire is having a cup of tea brought out to them.
