Jermaine Blackwood is much more circumspect for the rest of the over, seeing off a few deliveries for nabbing a quick single. Alzarri Joseph has one delivery to face, and he edges the ball towards slip before heading off for lunch.

West Indies are 170 runs behind the follow-on target. What a dreadful batting session.

    Blackwood 59, Joseph 2

Jermaine Blackwood is having a go, and why not? He shimmies down the wicket and belts Moeen straight back down the ground for six! That went some way, actually - it cleared the advertising boards and it's gone somewhere under the covers. Stuart Broad and Joe Root have been dispatched to go find it, and Root ends up crawling under the covers to find it, before tripping over as he makes his way back onto the field.

    Need 179 to avoid follow-on

New man Alzarri Joseph gets off the mark with a little tickle through square leg, before Sturat Broad marches back to his fielding position to a ripple of applause.

That was a very good delivery from Broad. There was a bouncer the previous delivery, then the fuller one. Roach was too late on it. West Indies in further trouble.

    Roach b Broad 5 (WI 134-8)

He's cleaned him up! The stump has gone twirling out of the ground! Roach was pushing forward to a full ball, missed it and turned around to see his off stump go cartwheeling out of the ground. That's better bowling from Broad, who just bowled a touch fuller throughout that over. Right. The question is now, can West Indies last until lunch? We've got four minutes to go...

  8. WI 134-7published at 39.3 overs

Looking at that Holder wicket, there looks to be noise both before and after the ball passes the bat. Holder certainly wasn't impressed as he left. This is good captaincy from Root, bringing Broad back on for a quick pre-lunch burst.

    Moeen 2-1-7-1

Kemar Roach is the new man, and he promptly drives his first ball from Moeen for four! He sees off the rest of the over. Can this pair last until lunch?

We can't even worry about whether the West Indies will get close to the 315 follow-on score, it's impossible. The question is whether England will enforce it.

  12. wicket

    Holder c Bairstow b Moeen 11 (WI 129-7)

Well played, Jonny Bairstow. There was indeed an edge as Holder went for the drive, and as a result, Marais Erasmus has had to change his decision. Out. West Indies still trail by 385 runs. What a shambles of a morning.

Blackwood is very aggressive by nature. There's nothing wrong with it, but he has to be a bit more selective. It is a good innings so far but there is a long way to go.

    WI 128-6

Stokes will carry on and Blackwood bends his knees to get under a short ball. He comes darting down the pitch in search of a quick single to take him to his half-century, but Stokes collects the ball in his follow-through, before banging in another short ball. He'll get it this time though, dropping the ball towards point and running a quick single. He raises his bat to the dressing room before shaking hands with his captain.

Jason Holder can bat a bit, but he's got a lot of work to do. Not just as a batsman, but as a captain.

Spin! Moeen is on for a twirl. It's an odd day in Birmingham, with the clouds suddenly appearing over the ground, and there's still a strong wind going. Jason Holder decides he likes the look of Moeen and throws two elaborate drives at successive deliveries, missing them both, and Jonny Bairstow whips off the bails to make his point. Holder reins himself in for one delivery before having another big heave at a straight ball, and missing. Stokes, at slip, has a chuckle to himself, before Holder blocks the final ball of the over.

Here's a reminder of the latest two wickets to fall.

  20. WI 127-6published at 36 overs

    Holder 11, Blackwood 49

Stuart Broad is off the field at the moment, which means Chris Woakes is on substitute fielder duty. Ben Stokes continues and Jermaine Blackwood flicks a short ball aerially over the top of leg gully and down towards the boundary. That's the second time he's played that shot and England had responded, setting a leg trap for him, but he's just managed to clear it.
