Hope looks technically correct but can allow pressure to build on himself, whereas Blackwood puts pressure on the bowler because he likes to score.

If you watched those series of the past, and have those memories of what great competitors the West Indies were, and the way they competed in all conditions, then seeing them perform like this is sad. The fact that they've fallen so far, and that Test cricket doesn't have a strong West Indies side any more, is a shame. Shai Hope is doing his best here, pushing forward to Toby Roland-Jones, but a thick outside edge goes quickly in front of gully and away to the boundary. Roland-Jones straightens his line, and Hope blocks the rest of the over.

    Hope 11, Blackwood 16

It's a double change for England, with Ben Stokes replacing Stuart Broad. Shai Hope has a marginal fiddle at his first ball before cutting a bit of wide rubbish away to the boundary. That was a loose delivery from Stokes, right in the slot, and Hope obliged with a fierce slap of a shot. He gets in behind the rest of the over, a slightly open stance, before picking up a quick three as he guides the ball through gully.

I've not seen a huge amount of Blackwood but he will create some moments in this series. If it's up, it's off. West Indies will know that if they can do the hard yards for 10 or 15 overs, it will get easier, but the problem is that they have lost four wickets.

James Anderson is going to take a breather, with figures of 12-5-23-3 to his name. Here's Toby Roland-Jones - and his first delivery has been driven for four! That's a shot and a half. It was full from Roland-Jones and Jermaine Blackwood got into the perfect position to push it back down the ground and into the boundary ropes. Blackwood throws his bat at another full delivery and gets an inside edge that just misses the stumps, before he and Shai Hope get into a bit of confusion with the running. Bairstow whips the bails off but Blackwood was home, having settled for two runs instead of three. He rounds off an eventful over with another push down the ground for four.

Broad was inconsistent yesterday but today he is running in hard and bowling quicker - the ball is going through nicely.

    S Hope 4, Blackwood 6

Shai Hope pushes forward to an off-cutter from Broad but he does it with soft hands, and the ball goes through the slip cordon and away for four. That was all along the ground and it went quickly, meaning third slip would have had a job on to stop it, but Broad still gives them a glare for good measure. He's bowled much better this morning but it's Anderson who has taken all the glory. The final ball of the over is a belter, Hope playing across his pad and getting a leading edge that hovers invitingly in the air for a second before dropping down onto the wicket.

Blackwood likes to play. We will see some strokes from him in this innings. But, it's been a horrific start for West Indies. It has taken a day or two but Broad is starting to enjoy bowling with the pink ball.

Anderson finds that extra lift yet again, the ball firing off the top of Jermaine Blackwood's bat and into the off side, but it drops just short of the advancing fielder. A short leg might have had a chance at that, but Anderson has never been overly keen on that position. Blackwood then gets off the mark, and breaks a long run of dot balls, with a carve through cover. That's better - a cracking cover drive from Blackwood picks up pace, despite the wet outfield, and goes rushing into the rope for four welcome runs.

Late joining us today? Don't worry, you've only missed three wickets - all coming at the hands of James Anderson:

    Broad 11-2-29-0

West Indies have lost three wickets for two runs in 24 balls this morning. It is difficult to get enjoyment out of a match that is so one-sided. Every time West Indies arrive here, we remark on what a shame it is that they've deteriorated so rapidly over the past 10 years or so, and yet nothing ever seems to change. It's a real shame for their fans, and for so many of us who watched the utterly dominant West Indies teams of the past. Broad whizzes through another maiden, with Shai Hope leaving anything he doesn't have to fend away from his stumps.

It's the old guard who have done it again in this Test match - Cook and Root scoring plenty of runs, then the same old partnership of Broad and Anderson this afternoon.

Jermaine Blackwood is the new man at the crease, and he watches the final ball of the over go past his off stump and swing into Bairstow's gloves. A wicket maiden for Anderson, who now has a healthy 490 Test wickets to his name.

It's well bowled from Anderson - he got it to tail back in. Chase will be frustrated, he came down a bit late with a closed grip. A big, big wicket.

    Chase b Anderson 0 (WI 47-4)

Bowled 'im! That's another good delivery from Anderson, nipping in and beating Roston Chase's defensive push forward. The ball takes the edge of the bat and cannons into the stumps, and Anderson goes wheeling away in celebration. An eleven ball duck for Chase. West Indies fans, I'd start doing a rain dance, if I were you.

Broad, looking much happier with life today, finds some looping away swing which wrong-foots Bairstow. The England keeper goes tumbling to his right as he follows the ball and the ball keeps moving, leaving him sprawled on the ground. Broad's found a better length this morning and he gets a delivery to rise on Shai Hope, the batsman camped on the back foot and he's unable to resist an attempted prod at it as swings past the off stump.

The fancy dressers have really pushed the boat out. I knew it was going to be special when I saw about 20 huntsmen, complete with fox, in the city centre this morning. A quick pan of the ground reveals Santas, a pig, bananas and lifeguards.
