England were, in the end, bowled out of 258 which meant West Indies had a tricky one-hour session to bat before the close.

With conditions in his favour James Anderson moved to 493 Test wickets with the dismissal of Kieran Powell but Kraigg Brathwaite and nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo took their side to 19-1 at the close.

More from Ben Stokes: "When they got the balls in the right areas, it was hard to score. We created a few chances tonight when they were just looking to survive. When tomorrow comes around, they will play a few more shots and that could work in our favour."

Some of Stokes' strokeplay was as good as anything you'll see. He has the knack of hitting the ball where the fielders aren't. Root played nicely and will be disappointed with his dismissal. He didn't need to take any risks against Bishoo.

England's Ben Stokes, speaking to Sky Sports: "We might be a little disappointed with 260. We won't know if it's a good score until the end of the West Indies innings. I tried to be positive today - they were trying to bowl wide to me so I tried to hit into the leg side to upset their plans. I had a brain fade on 98. It was one of those moments, where I thought 'what am I doing'. I was annoyed at myself for getting out too. Maybe I switched off a little bit so hopefully I can use that feeling of frustration when I next get into that position."

England's top order once again failed and when Ben Stokes walked out at 71-4 they were in serious trouble.

But, after a slow start, the all-rounder played a typically swashbuckling innings mixed with power and precision to reach his sixth Test hundred.

I think Tom Westley has been found out at this level - just bowl the channel and get the ball to do a little. It doesn't have to do much when you've got the head position he's got. There's no balance to his play.

I think Tom Westley is one innings from the drop. Even if he scores runs in the second innings, there will still be doubts with that technique.

Stoneman, Westley and Malan all have an opportunity to book their place to Australia and all of them made mistakes. The selectors will be concerned. Stoneman needs longer - he's only had two innings. The one positive in a negative day is that all three will get a second chance. If England had scored 500, they might not have batted again.

As for England, they are left with the same questions they started with.

Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley and Dawid Malan were all out cheaply and in doing so failed to cement their places in the side...

The tourists dropped a host of catches with misses of Root and Stokes twice particularly costly.

Stokes was dropped on nine and 98 as he went to three figures.

Kemar Roach: "We had a big meeting about discipline, we weren't good enough in the first Test and we came out and were much better here.

"It was a pretty tough day, you've got to keep mentally strong. Stokes batted really well - it didn't go our way today with those catches but we will talk about that too.

"I can't really fault the fielders much - we fielded well in the warm-up games but today was not a good day at the office.

"Stokes got a hundred, kudos to him, but it won't happen in the second innings.

"It's tough to change but I'm comfortable [with my release point on the crease] for now.

"We'll stick with it, come back tomorrow and try to get a lead on England."

My highlight of the day was Shannon Gabriel. There's nothing subtle about him. He just thunders in and Test cricket needs fast bowlers like him. I'm glad I don't have to face bowlers like him anymore.

It's been a nice day to have the ball in hand. Edgbaston was a one-sided contest but today it's been a two-sided contest. Shannon Gabriel was magnificent but Kemar Roach was the pick - he bowled the perfect length for Headingley.

West Indies' bowling was rightfully criticised at Edgbaston but today was much, much better.

Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel bowled with pace and accuracy and took four wickets each but it could have been even better.

All the talk pre-match was of another West Indies capitulation but that was a pretty good day of cricket.

West Indies did well to end the day just one down after a fine 100 from Ben Stokes.

But that doesn't tell half of the story. Let's have a look at some highlights of the day.

I think today has breathed some life into the series.

So this is Chris Woakes first bowl for England since the first match of the Champions Trophy in June when he picked up that side injury.

Five slips and a short leg but he isn't fully into his rhythm as a short ball is below 80mph.

Now that's wide. Brathwaite and leave that alone. Make him play, Chris.

Straighter to finish but the edge from Brathwaite goes down. That is that for today.

Some older bowlers wouldn't like this - having to bowl just one over. It takes a lot of warming up and stretching.

Anderson is racing through his sixth over to make sure Broad has a chance for one more before the 18:30 BST cut off. Jimmy is on target but not as threatening as he was earlier in the spell as he perhaps tires a little or maybe loses concentration as he tries to beat the clock.
