Fielding and dropped catches are going to really hurt West Indies. They bowled well until the last hour or so where it's been a bit ragged but Stokes has made them look that ragged in fairness.

It's one of those days that they will be left asking, "What if?"

    Stokes 100, Woakes 19

Why is Roston Chase bowling? West Indies have a specialist leg spinner who has hardly bowled and the part-time off spinner Chase is bowling down 'hit-me balls' to Chris Woakes. One down the leg side and two wide of off stump and Woakes finds the rope with all three.

That'll be drinks and a chance for Stokes to savour that century.

It's been a joy to watch and the West Indies now have a real problem because Ben Stokes might go into gear nine now.

100 to Stokespublished at 67 overs

And a ball later Ben Stokes brings up his sixth Test match century!

West Indies have dropped him twice but that's a fine knock from the all-rounder.

    Headingley stands and applauds.

  5. dropped catch

Stokes dropped 98published at 66.4 overs

    Would you believe it?!

Stokes tries to go to three figures in style but doesn't properly connect. The ball is still hit hard but it goes straight to Shannon Gabriel at mid on and inexplicably the fielder spills it.

The bowler Kemar Roach is furious.

Jay: Leave Stokes where he is. By the time the Aussies cut through and get to him, they'll be overconfident & he can make them pay.

  7. Eng 239-7published at 66 overs

    Stokes 98, Woakes 6

Roston Chase starts his 11th over with Stokes on the brink of another century. It's curious that he has bowled more overs today than specialist spinner Devendra Bishoo who dismissed Joe Root. One to ask Jason Holder about at the close of play.

It is tidy enough from Chase but he just doesn't look like taking a wicket at the moment.

Ben Stokes is like Kevin Pietersen in that he looks absolutely supreme the longer he stays at the crease. Somebody like Alastair Cook looks exactly the same whatever point in the innings he is at.

  9. Eng 236-7published at 65 overs

    Stokes 97, Woakes 6

That's an interesting point from Freddie. We've had many a discussion in this office that Stokes has the best technique in the current England team. That run of ducks against India a few years back seems a long time ago.

The crowd are quiet again now. They're almost waiting for the Stokes century and onslaught that could follow.

For now they're being made to wait.

Freddie: Ben Stokes at 3 for the Ashes? Proper technique and can dictate terms? Just an idea...

  11. Eng 233-7published at 64 overs

    Stokes 94, Woakes 6

Now Chris Woakes joins the party. Short and wide from Roston Chase and it's given what it deserves.

England may not have a top order but their lower order keeps on digging them out of trouble.

  12. Eng 229-7published at 63 overs

    Stokes 94, Woakes 2

Two more picked up by Stokes with complete ease.

He has looked unfazed by the dismissal of Moeen Ali.

Thoughts on this shot, people? Just the way Mo plays?

  13. Eng 227-7published at 62.4 overs

    Stokes 92, Woakes 2

Stokes is still wandering down the pitch to Roach even though the seamer is a bit quicker than Holder who was dispatched earlier.

He's in good nick here. Seriously good. A ball a foot outside off stump is hit through mid-wicket for Stokes' 17th four.

That was classic Ben Stokes. Into the 90s...

  15. Eng 223-7published at 62 overs

    Stokes 88, Woakes 2

Chris Woakes has not played much cricket since his side injury so it will be interesting to see how he fares here. You'd think he'd be a good partner for Stokes, sitting in while the Durham all-rounder continues to attack.

Woakes does seem to be just feeling his way in. A couple of tentative defensive strokes and one which beats him on the outside edge from Chase.

  16. Eng 222-7published at 61 overs

    Stokes 87, Woakes 2

Fair play to Jason Holder. He needed a wicket and took himself out of the attack and within two balls the change worked.

The depth of this England batting line-up is shown as Chris Woakes meets Stokes in the middle at number nine (NINE!!). The Warwickshire al-rounder gets off the mark with a thick edge through the covers for two.

Those are priceless runs from Moeen. The ball's doing a bit and 250 might be a good score on this surface. Unless the sun shines strongly, it'll stay the same and continue to give assistance to the bowlers.

    Moeen c Chase b Roach 22 (Eng 220-7)

    Ahhh.

It was good while it lasted by Moeen Ali goes in typical Moeen Ali fashion.

Holder turns to Kemar Roach for a breakthrough and Moeen, with his weight slightly back, drives the second ball of the over in the air to backward point.

  19. Eng 220-6published at 60 overs

    Stokes 87, Moeen 22

For now West Indies will be happy to keep Ben Stokes at the non-striker's end. Chase starts his over with four dots to Moeen but that's rubbish. The spinner is too short and Moeen just swipes the ball for another boundary.

These two have added 64 runs in 10 overs after tea. The alarm bells must be ringing for West Indies.

England's middle to lower order - Stokes, Bairstow, Moeen and Woakes - make such a difference. If the first one or two doesn't get you, the others will.
