On the subject of sledging and the West Indies, didn't Jimmy Adams have a knack of winding up Curtly Ambrose? I remember a story about Jimmy saying to Curtly: "Did you hear what he called you, man?" The poor batsman in question hadn't said a word!

Six slips now for Broad as Moeen Ali joins the party behind the wicket. Mid-off must be feeling lonely. That drops down to just the four as Bishoo uses the unusual tactic of taking a single off the second ball of the over as nightwatchman. Brathwaite sees the other four balls off so no damage done.

  3. WI 14-1published at 9 overs

    Brathwaite 9, Bishoo 0

Oh my word. How has this missed?

The big inswinger from Anderson beats the inside edge of Brathwaite and somehow also misses the stumps.

Jonny Bairstow looks to the cloudy skies behind the stumps.

At the end of the over a substitute runs onto the field with a drink for the West Indians. A time-wasting tactic?

When Jimmy does retire - and please don't let that be any time soon - I think my main memory will be wickets like this to the left-hander...

How Anderson torments these West Indian batsmen. He looked to swing it away from the left-hander from over the wicket. There was just enough movement, bounce and pace.

  6. WI 12-1published at 8 overs

    Brathwaite 7, Bishoo 0

Stuart Broad got a big hug from Jimmy Anderson after the wicket in the previous over. As soon as Anderson dismissed Powell, he turned and pointed to his opening partner. Was there a word of advice after Broad found Powell's edge earlier?

Broad has five deliveries at Bishoo in his latest over. The plan is clear, England have an eight-one off side field (the one is short leg) but the nightwatchman stays strong.

Bishoo can bat - he averages 16. In these conditions and against these bowlers, there's no point sending in somebody who can't bat because they won't last very long.

West Indies send in nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo to tackle one of the toughest tests in world cricket. The seam was just perfect for that wicket-taking delivery. Anderson has got better players than Kieran Powell out with balls like that.

    Powell c Cook b Anderson 5 (WI 11-1)

Bowled Anderson, caught Cook. How many times have we seen that? This is just classic Anderson. A ball from over the wicket, pitched up and moving away edged to first slip. That is Cook's 150th catch while Jimmy moves to 493.

Stuart Broad now, as a matter of course, comes round the wicket to the left-handers and moves the ball away from them. It's quite natural to him because of his open action.

  11. WI 11-0published at 6 overs

    Brathwaite 6, Powell 5

Joe Root responds to that missed chance by closing the gap but it's too late now. That streaky run got Powell off the mark but it hasn't settled him down.

Really full from Broad and Powell swings and misses on the walk. The crowd gasp.

Broad looks pumped. His pace is up at 86mph. Good signs.

  12. WI 10-0published at 5.1 overs

    Edged and.... in the gap!

England have four slips then a gap before a sixth slip/gully and Powell's edge flies straight through and down to third man for four.

Hands on heads in the slips. Not one of them could have got there.

  13. WI 6-0published at 5 overs

    Brathwaite 6, Powell 0

Better from Anderson. Brathwaite is forced to play more often than previously and Jimmy is a little fuller.

A maiden. West Indies aren't going to take any risks before the close. If they do, I think their coach Stuart Law might explode.

  14. WI 6-0published at 4 overs

    Brathwaite 6, Powell 0

Good from Powell so far. He is not being tempted as Broad bowls outside off stump. He's yet to get off the mark but at least is surviving in bowler-friendly conditions.

The camera picks out a man dressed as Donald Trump in the crowd. The red cap is still in place but the wig is drooping. It's late in the day, I guess. West Indies have half an hour left to the close.

After that slightly bad-tempered end to the innings, how about handing Stokes the new ball? He's obviously fired up.

I nearly choked on my water at that story from Swann. Brilliant stuff.

For now Anderson looks to be keeping silent as he bowls down a tight over to Brathwaite.

No massive swing so far, maybe Anderson could get it a litter fuller. Then again, he has 492 Test wickets. He knows what he is doing.

James Anderson is good at winding up batsmen. In the Ashes, he kept calling Mike Hussey by his brother's name Dave. "Good shot, Dave", "Well left, Dave." Hussey kept quiet then snapped in the fourth Test: "I'm Mike, mate. Dave's my brother." The fact he eventually snapped back and we won the series heavily tells me it worked. It's very childish but it affects some players more than others.

  18. WI 4-0published at 2 overs

    Brathwaite 4, Powell 0

As ever it is Stuart Broad to open up with Anderson. Brathwaite is looking to get right across his stumps and nudge the ball into the leg side and leave outside off stump.

Powell has a different challenge when facing Broad as the quick comes around the wicket.

Broad is trying to tempt the opener into a nibble but Powell just about lets the ball go through.

  20. WI 1-0published at 1 over

Joe Root is on the attack with four slips for Anderson.

The Burnley Express starts outside off stump with a little bit of shape before Brathwaite gets off the mark with a single.

That brings left-hander Kieran Powell on strike and Anderson and all of the close fielders appeal on the final ball as the opener is hit on the pad but an inside edge saves him.

    Probing start.
