  1. Eng 151-5published at 46 overs

    Stokes 44, Bairstow 1

Here's Gabriel - plenty of devil in his pace, still up in the high 80s as Bairstow gets off the mark with a single.

That's loose from the Windies quick - short and wide and Stokes whips his wrists to slap it away to the boundary.

Good response from Gabriel, rapping the very top of Stokes' pads - a strangled appeal but that was going well over.

  2. Rooted outpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 25 August 2017

It's true that Joe Root's conversion rate does lag behind the likes of Steve Smith, Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson.

But I take your point, Kieran. The captain is rather carrying this batting order at times.

Parking that debate for a while, Root will be spitting that he managed to edge this ball...

I'm sure someone will bring up Root's conversion rate now, and while it'd be nice if he pushed on more, the fact is he does his job and if others did as well there'd be no issue.

  4. Eng 146-5published at 45 overs

"Catch" is the cry as Stokes cuts off the back foot.

It was in the air but not nearly close enough to the fielder as the ball races away to the fence.

A couple more for a square drive to finish the over.

  5. Eng 140-5published at 44 overs

Bairstow calmly sees off his first ball.

The two redheads need to bail England out here.

Against the spinner here, you can only get yourself out. That was well outside off stump and turning away and he tried to paddle sweep. He could have left it or played it easily into the off side. It wasn't a special ball. He's got himself out.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 43.5 overs

    Root c Blackwood b Bishoo 59 (Eng 140-5)

Cripes. Pretty much out of nowhere, Joe Root is on his way back.

The England captain takes out the sweep shot that has served him well so far today, only that ball is wider and the turn is sharper from Bishoo.

The result? The ball tickles the toe end of the bat as it spins away from Root, nestling safely in the palms of Jermaine Blackwood at first slip.

There has only been one five-wicket haul taken by a spinner at Leeds in the last 32 years - Graeme Swann against New Zealand in 2013.

  9. Record for Rootpublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 25 August 2017

And here is the moment Joe Root equalled the record for the most consecutive Test matches with at least one score of 50.

  10. Eng 137-4published at 43 overs

Roach to Stokes - bang, four. Yet again Stokes looks in fine fettle getting on the front foot and drilling a cover drive.

A leg bye off the hips as England scramble a single - Dowrich pulled off a direct hit but Root was well home.

  11. Eng 132-4published at 15:01 British Summer Time 25 August 2017

    Root 57, Stokes 29

Lovely stuff from Joe Root, who is making Windies really pay for that early drop.

Plenty of touch and timing in evidence as he unfurls two exquisite sweeps off Bishoo - the second placed well to run away for four.

Root and Stokes tucking into some looser bowling now, although the latter has ridden his luck since lunch.

What makes Joe Root's achievement so impressive is that five of his half-centuries were against India, then four were against South Africa. Basically against a combination of high-quality spin and seam.

  13. Eng 124-4published at 41 overs

    Root 50, Stokes 28

You really shouldn't let Ben Stokes off the hook.

The Durham man picks up Roach's short ball and batters it away for four, despite not finding the middle. A classy punch for two follows.

Oh no - Stokes then edges again but there is now no-one at third slip. It would've gone straight to the man who was there a couple of balls ago.

Whether he would've caught it is another matter, but another chance goes begging for West Indies.

Joe Root was thrilled to lead England out for the first time in a Test match here and now he's got some runs to remember the occasion by. What an achievement this is for Joe too. It shows his consistency. What I like about Joe - and I interview him a lot now because he's captain - is that he's kept his sense of humour.

  15. 50 runs

50 for Rootpublished at 40 overs

    Eng 114-4

The other man to be dropped today - Joe Root - faces up to Bishoo.

A single, another single for Stokes and the captain is back on strike.

Wait, wait, wait - there it is, the Yorkshireman sweeping a full ball away to the fence to reach his half century.

That's the 12th consecutive Test he's made at least a 50 in - equalling the world record of South Africa's AB de Villiers.

Hugely impressive and even more important for England in the context of this match.

How often does the next ball get hit for four? It's so frustrating for the bowler.

  17. Eng 108-4published at 39 overs

And Stokes makes Windies pay by clattering the very next ball through the covers.

Much better from the all-rounder, getting properly forward onto the front foot.

Another big let off. West Indies on top but it could be so much better.

  18. dropped catch

    Stokes droppedpublished at 38.3 overs

England should be five down straight after the drinks break.

It's a tougher chance than Powell's but Brathwaite should have snaffled it.

Ben Stokes prodded forward indecisively at a full ball - it went quick to second slip but Brathwaite was not set at all and ended up snatching at it above his head as the ball streaked away for four.

Thanks Matt, a fellow member and of the 'We loved Ian Bell too but you've got to learn to let him go' club.

Admittedly the club needs a punchier name.

Roach has the ball in his hands and they're ready to resume...
