If Bishoo gets it right he is dangerous. But so often it all comes down to how he starts. If he starts well, he does well. That's why he's struggled to stay in the team.

Bishoo continues - all a bit flat from the leggie, not enough loop to lure Root into a false stroke.

That's better though - Bishoo finally finding a bit of drift and turn to beat the outside edge.

A couple for Root to finish - and that's drinks.

Big appeal from West Indies. Roach is convinced he has Stokes caught behind.

It's a really full ball and Stokes throws his bat at it. There's a definite noise but is that ball hitting bat or bat hitting ground? The umpire thinks the latter but to be honest I have no idea.

Replays show the ball went passed the bat at the same moment Stokes' bat definitely hit the turf. Did it flick the edge as well? Who knows? Ultra-edge can't tell us the answer. It's just a big scribble.

Kemar Roach is back into the attack. He's wearing a big gold chain which brings to mind images of West Indies' quicks of yesteryear.

Stokes doesn't seem impressed with the bowling though. Full and wide dispatched to the fence.

    Root 42, Stokes 5

This is an important period for West Indies. Their seamers have been excellent but with just three quicks playing in this match they need Bishoo to keep it tight.

His first over follows on from that first ball in being too short and England take seven runs from it with complete ease.

    Hmmmmm.

I know Haseeb Hameed has not had the best of seasons, but he could not do any worse than what Stoneman, Malan and Westley are doing at the moment at the top of the order.

This should be interesting. A first look at leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo in this series as he replaces Gabriel.

Not the best start. A little short and Root whips the ball to the mid-wicket fence.

Root is already eyeing another half century. How does he make it look this easy?

    Root 36, Stokes 4

What a mixed bag of an over that was from Jason Holder. Two big wides but three testing deliveries right on target at the top of off stump.

It's not easy for Stokes as he can't quite be sure what is coming but he does well to stick around.

Holder is still getting a fair bit of movement and this ball is now 35 overs old. Maybe they just prefer the traditional one to the pink ball?

There have not been many loose balls from West Indies after lunch but this full toss was one of them. Expertly put away by England's skipper.

  10. Eng 84-4published at 34 overs

    Root 36, Stokes 4

Gabriel is going to continue to Root. Can he create some more uncertainty like in his previous over?

The big seamer looks for that full delivery but finds the pitch this time and Root would likely have picked up four with a drive but for a left hand from the bowler in his follow through.

Now this shows how slow the pitch is. An 88mph short ball from Gabriel and England's skipper can just swivel and guide the ball for four.

An interesting point from Jack. I was looking at the stats earlier and Cook and Compton's partnership of 231 against New Zealand in 2013 remains comfortably England's biggest opening partnership since the retirement of Andrew Strauss.

Would England have stuck with Compton had they known what was to come?

Stokes sees off the final two balls of Holder's over.

Neil Yelland: How much vetting is done on players coming into the team? Basic alignment/technical issues shouldn't be discovered in Tests...

Jack: England now have egg on their face for their poor treatment of Compton and his opening style. He and Cook did well as a pair.

  13. Eng 80-4published at 32.4 overs

    Root 32, Stokes 4

Ben Stokes is off the mark with a four. He's been kept quiet for 12 deliveries by Jason Holder but this time the West Indies skipper is a bit too leg side.

There were a couple of shouts of "catch" but it was comfortably over the man at mid-wicket.

  14. Eng 76-4published at 32 overs

    Root 32, Stokes 0

"Rooooooooot". The tense silence around Headingley is broken by appreciation for their favourite son.

He is beaten first ball of the over but a couple of deliveries later Gabriel serves up a full toss which is dispatched through extra cover for four.

What's gone on there? Another full toss, this one shin high and Root just didn't pick it up. He does that classic batsman's expression of widening the eyes as if to say 'I didn't see it'. Root is lucky the ball was a yard wide of the stumps.

I can't be the only West Indian coming out of hiding today. This has been some turnaround. Glad to see it

For now the "freak" that is Ben Stokes is going to be watchful.

Leave, leave, block but did he have a little nibble at that last one?

I think so and so do Jason Holder and the slip cordon. West Indies have started well after lunch. Here's the wicket of Dawid Malan...

Somebody's tweeted to tell me Ben Stokes made his debut in Australia. Yes... but Ben Stokes is a freak. He's going to be one of England's greatest ever players. Not many will be able to cope with a baying Aussie crowd and Mitchell Starc tearing in early evening and bowling at 95mph.

Well said Tom. The England middle to lower order has a job to do as does one gentleman in a fleece - I assume a member of the groundstaff.

There is a problem with the sight screen as it is refusing to change back to white after displaying the sponsors' logo during the previous over.

The chap has got a chair to help him reach and is getting plenty of encouragement from the crowd. For now the players are sat down on the field.

Peaky: Is this England batting line-up better than the 2013/14 one? I'd say no. But Australia won't have Johnson or Harris.

Tom Potter‏: Let's stop worrying about the Ashes for now and focus on beating the West Indies first!
