  1. Eng 71-4published at 30 overs

    Gabriel 10-3-21-1

Suddenly Joe Root looks a tad uncertain.

Gabriel drifts onto his pads and for once the England skipper misses out as the ball is squirmed out into the covers off the leading edge.

Gabriel's pace is really impressive. A maiden bowled consistently around 90mph.

You can't criticise the batting coach. He is given these players, he doesn't select them. Mark Ramprakash will get Tuesday and Wednesday to work with them before a Test. What Ramprakash can do now is pull Tom Westley aside for a chat and tell him that his head position has got to change or he will continue to fail.

  3. Eng 71-4published at 29 overs

    Root 28, Stokes 0

Ben Stokes is the new man and safely sees out the final two balls of the over with Holder finding plenty of swing on the final delivery in particular.

The replays of the Malan dismissal show the ball did not move one bit. It was a full delivery but perhaps not quite full enough to drive.

I can hear #bbccricket whirring away already.

That's a poor shot. At Headingley, in these conditions, you shouldn't be pushing your hands at the ball. Play it a little later.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 28.4 overs

    Malan b Holder 8 (Eng 71-4)

Uh oh. The third of the England batsman under pressure goes.

Jason Holder comes around the wicket to the left-hander and Dawid Malan gets on the front foot but inside edges a drive onto his stumps.

A penny for the selectors' thoughts?

Those players in county cricket with half a sniff - the likes of Nick Browne, Haseeb Hameed etc - need to score two hundreds in three games towards the end of the season. That could be timely enough to get them on the plane to Australia.

  7. Eng 71-3published at 28 overs

    Root 28, Malan 8

That's what Malan is after. Short and wide from Shannon Gabriel and the left-hander uppercuts for four.

Gabriel turns and looks at the foot marks suggesting he slipped. He was excellent before lunch so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

He ends the over with a 92mph yorker which Root just gets his bat down on. That's fast in anyone's book.

Jake Stevenson: Why are we still overlooking Alex Hales? It's outrageous to think a talent like that isn't being used.

I still think Gary Ballance can be a very good number five for England. He reads situations well and it's where he's had a lot of success for Yorkshire. He's certainly not suited to number three though.

  10. Eng 66-3published at 27 overs

    Root 28, Malan 3

It is definitely cloudier than at the start of play this morning and Holder is finding a little bit of shape.

The trouble for the West Indies skipper is on a slow pitch he doesn't seem to have enough pace to trouble Root.

A couple of times the Yorksireman hits back-foot drives but picks out the fielder meaning Holder bowls six dots after that first ball shocker.

  11. Eng 66-3published at 26 overs

    Root 28, Malan 3

    Err not like that.

Jason Holder bowled four consecutive maidens before lunch but starts very short and very wide in the mid-70s mph.

Root just about reaches the ball and cuts for four. To make matters worse it's also a no ball.

Let's be nice to Jason and say he needed to loosen off after his sandwiches.

  12. Eng 61-3published at 26 overs

    Root 24, Malan 3

    Anyway back to today.

Root and Malan are striding back out under overcast skies at Headingley.

    A good time to bowl?

I'm sorry but I am not having the suggestions of an Ian Bell recall.

I loved Bell as much as any England fan during his Test career but he averages 24.64 this season in the County Championship. He was even dropped by Birmingham Bears last week for their crucial T20 Blast final group match.

Feel free to tweet in and tell me that I'm wrong/suggest alternatives.

P.S. You still won't change my mind ;)

Sam James: Time for Dan Lawrence to be given a chance?

Chris: Sorry Tom Westley but if you can't score runs against the Windies at home, you're not going to make it. Who's next?

Joel Ross: Jos Buttler would do a job at 3, he could take games away from you like Gilchrist did. And why not bring Bell back in to open?

  15. No homecoming for Woodpublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 25 August 2017

Durham bowler Mark Wood has been denied the chance to play for his boyhood side Ashington on Saturday due to Northumberland and Tyneside Senior Cricket League regulations.

Wood, 27, has not played since suffering a heel injury with England in the Test against South Africa at Trent Bridge in July.

"We do sympathise with him," NTSCL secretary Paul Lee told BBC Sport.

However, Lee said Wood's inclusion could "unduly influence" the outcome of the league, which was obliged to uphold the wishes of its member clubs.

"Mark is a very nice lad and very supportive of local cricket, I've umpired him a few times, but despite his background with Ashington he is not currently registered.

"It is a long-standing arrangement that at this stage of the season a professional cannot be registered with a club."

Ashington wanted to include Wood for Saturday's game against Shotley Bridge, where Durham and former England all-rounder Paul Collingwood is registered.

Collingwood, 41, said the rules were "stubborn" and the league "should be proud of their home-grown pro players rather than penalising them".

The ECB has not put any pressure on the NTSCL to give Wood a game, but he would have the green light to bat and field if allowed.

A bit of news from the county circuit...

Lancashire captain Steven Croft has been awarded a testimonial year in 2018.

The 32-year-old has made over 450 appearances for the Red Rose county and hit the winning runs as they won the County Championship for the first time in 77 years in 2011.

The Blackpool-born all-rounder has made an English record 143 consecutive appearances for Lancashire Lightning in T20 cricket.

“It’s a great honour for me to be awarded a Testimonial by Lancashire CCC. Anyone that knows me will know how much this Club, and everything it stands for, means to me, so I’m very humbled by this decision.

“It has been a dream come true to play for this Club. I’m incredibly proud to walk out with the Red Rose on my chest and all I want is for Lancashire to be successful.

I worry about Westley around off stump and just outside. He is OK when it is very straight.

He hits very across the line. There have been players like Kevin Pietersen and Viv Richards who were extraordinary players who hit to leg but they played with a straighter bat.

That is a fantastic session for West Indies. They have bossed it. Very well done Shannon Gabriel especially. Talk about an improvement from Edgbaston.

I think they may have had a word or two from coach Stuart Law.

After receiving a barrage of criticism last week, the West Indies bowlers have been pretty much perfect this morning.

But for all their excellence, how big a moment could this be?

Joe Root dropped on eight by Kieran Powell.

And to make matters worse the England skipper has looked in fine touch. Does he ever not?
