If I was Joe Root I wouldn't be watching because Westley hasn't looked as though he can middle one yet. I'd be reading a book instead. I want a batsman to convince me he can look comfortable, with the footwork, play the ball in the middle of the bat. I don't get that from Westley, he is chest on and looks very vulnerable outside the off stump, which is where the good bowlers bowl.

    Cook 6, Westley 0

England and Cook find some welcome respite as the former skipper guides a slightly over-pitched Roach delivery away through third man to the fence.

Good response by Roach, some nice shape, but Cook in behind.

A push towards mid on brings a single to finish and keeps Westley off strike for now.

What West Indies have to do is bowl the disciplined line they had at Headingley, not the both sides of the wicket line they bowled at Edgbaston. You'll probably get another wicket or two if you do that. If you don't, you'll at least make it difficult for England.

Gabriel finishes by hanging one outside off that Westley shapes to defend but crucially doesn't play at.

This is already an immense challenge for Westley in these conditions. If he can get to the close unscathed, he'll be due a fair amount of credit.

  6. Eng 2-1published at 17:16 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

Cook gets off the mark to put his Essex team-mate Westley back on strike.

Ooof - that very nearly does for him, Gabriel squaring him up as it flicks the trouser pocket on the way through to Dowrich.

Windies go up for the catch but their appeal is rightfully turned down. That was close.

  7. Eng 1-1published at 17:15 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Cook 0, Westley 0

Tom Westley the new man for England - his hopes of an Ashes place not entirely resting on this innings but the Essex batsman is in desperate need of a good knock.

Roach knows how to bowl to him, though. Going wide of the crease and targeting the pads, the Windies quick gets an in-swinger to rise up and hit Westley's thigh.

That was a good ball, it bounced and it was one of those teasers outside off stump. He played from a static position and it was away from his body because his foot didn't go back and across. Once you're playing like that to a rising ball you've got a problem, but I do feel he could have played it a bit better.

  9. wicket

    Stoneman c Dowrich b Roach 1 (Eng 1-1)

Kemar Roach has started the innings bowling too wide to the left-handed England pair, who had been happy to leave.

That is until Mark Stoneman pokes tentatively at one that is fairly wide of off stump, but crucially got a bit of extra bounce.

A good ball but Stoneman could've played it better - a bit of a waft that he edges through to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich.

It has been quality swing from either end and that is what has undone them. The atmosphere has been perfect for them but I think Holder is the one that could swing it for them more than these two opening bowlers.

Mark Stoneman gets off the mark, clipping a straight Shannon Gabriel delivery off his legs.

Cook happy to defend but he plays and misses at the final ball.

Nice angle across from Gabriel, bit of seam, but no real swing for the Windies quick.

  12. Eng 0-0published at 1 over

Roach round the wicket to Cook - hint of some shape away or perhaps just a bit of wobble but too wide.

Nothing too taxing for the watchful England opener who plays out a maiden.

A nice sedate start after the furious flurry by Stokes.

So West Indies emerged from tea on 119-7 and added just four runs for the last three wickets, thanks to an inspired Ben Stokes.

The scantest of scant consolations for the tourists is their bowlers know the conditions are conducive to swing and they'll hope that can inspire them to remove England's top order cheaply again.

Kemar Roach to Alastair Cook first up...England should have about 30 overs to bat in the rest of the day.

Ben Stokes has just recorded his career-best figures and is now on both honours boards at Lord's - just the eighth player to achieve that feat.

    Sensational.

A number 11 had no chance with that, he missed it by a foot and a half. Shannon Gabriel will be looking forward to a bowl rather than having his batting examined.

It has been a joy to watch, when the boys get it right like that at both ends there is no better sight. I don't know how West Indies could have done any better. That was Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram stuff.

Gabriel b Stokes 0 (WI 123 all out)

Oh my, Ben Stokes you beauty.

A truly joyous spell of swing bowling ends in a fitting finale, with the all-rounder sending down a hooping in-swinger that sails beyond Shannon Gabriel's waft and thwacks middle stump.

Stokes finishes with 6-22 as West Indies lost their last eight wickets for just 45 runs.

And spare a thought for James Anderson - that 500 will just have to wait. He bowled brilliantly but Stokes has bowled even better.

Just a bit of bounce from Stokes, angled in swung away, got a bit of glove and a corner edge of the bat and what a catch by Anderson. Great bowling, face that if you can! The boys have got it on a string.

  19. wicket

    Roach c Anderson b Stokes 0 (WI 123-9)

Well if you can't take the wicket yourself...you can at least catch them.

And what a catch it is - James Anderson putting in a salmon-like leap in the slips to snaffle Kemar Roach for a duck, diving across Tom Westley at third slip.

Tremendous again from Ben Stokes, who takes his fifth wicket and seems on a one-man mission to prevent Anderson getting to 500 this innings.

Great delivery, bit of lift. Play that.

  20. WI 123-8published at 16:45 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

I simply don't know how any of the deliveries in this Anderson over didn't take him to 500 Test wickets.

The first finds the edge and races streakily away for four.

The next four are simply unplayable. Swing bowling from the gods - beating Bishoo's bat and/or stumps by ridiculously fine margins.

The last is another peach of an outswinger. How has Bishoo survived that?
