Forgive me for saying but I can't help but notice from the Tavern Stand that the England kit is very ill-fitting on most players, especially the trousers. The Windies kit is sharp, smart and well-fitted without being tight. Could ours not be sharpened up a bit before the Ashes?

    1-9 (7 overs)

Stokes has been jagging the ball sharply in to the right handers but he gets one that moves away off the pitch as well. It's a no-ball but if he can send down a legitimate one of those he will be in clover.

Blackwood just had a reminder today not to get above your station in cricket. He looked like he was trying to hit that ball onto the England balcony.

    Chase 12, Dowrich 0

The wind is picking up at the Home of Cricket and there are some very dark clouds over the Mound Stand, but in the the sunshine hokey-cokey it is bright at the moment. Chase hit his first two balls for four and after playing out 25 dot balls he pulls Roland-Jones for another one.

More prodigious in-swing from Stokes and they scamper through for a leg bye to move the score on from 87. England batting coach Mark Ramprakash ambles round the boundary edge with Chris Woakes equipped with those ladles used for throwing balls down at speed, as favoured by elderly dog walkers.

Roland-Jones just looks so comfortable playing Test cricket and that is part of selection, how people carry themselves.

    Roland-Jones 2-28 (10 overs)

Four slips for Roland-Jones from the Pavilion End. The artificial light from the scoreboards and the pylons still shining brightly out across the emerald turf. Another maiden, the 16th of the innings.

    Chase 8, Dowrich 0

Stokes conceded a boundary with his opening delivery but his 4.5 overs since then have cost only four more. Big in-swing from the all-rounder but Chase gets an inside edge into his pad. We have had no reviews yet today, which makes a change. Difficult times for the Windies and the imposing figure of their all-conquering former captain Clive Lloyd looks on pensively. The big man rang the bell to signal the start of play this morning.

Impressive accuracy from Roland-Jones and in that little burst of action the Windies have lost 3-9 in 21 deliveries.

Chris Kidd: All Hopes are lost for the West Indies.

Daniel Davies: Shame the Windies weren't scoring a little faster, these wickets have put them in a tricky situation.

Sam Rogers: Powell might be blaming Chase for that dismissal, Chase practicing a drive as Stokes comes into bowl must have put him off!

Perfect length, perfect line, just outside off stump and coming back in, using the slope. Good experience of the conditions by Roland-Jones - a beautiful bit of bowling.

That was far too ambitious a shot for 87-4 on the first day of a Test match.

Blackwood played that pivotal cameo at Headingley with two sixes in a quickfire 41 to help the Windies towards their target but this was a pretty loose one and the timbers are rattled.

Ben Stokes has just taken his first wicket but his home crowd at Durham won't be able to see him in action in the sole Twenty20 international against West Indies on 16 Septemer.

The all-rounder will be rested for the sold-out match, with England coach Trevor Bayliss saying it was "a collective decision between the management and the player."

Stumped presenters Clint Wheeldon and Charu Sharma aren't having any of it - listen to them going off their long runs...

Plenty of talk about this fungus and it is on the actual cut strip. They look a bit like those crop circles that dear old Reg Presley used to be keen on but there has been nothing out of this world about the surface so far. Steady from Stokes, just the one run conceded.

How about a thigh pad with in-built hip flask for your favourite tipple?

    Dave in Glasgow

Bit of a trend emerging here...but I like it very much. The hip flask could go in the bat handle too couldn't it? like those old putters they used to give away on pro-celebrity golf. Ah, they should bring that back.

    Roland-Jones 1-28 (8 overs)

Roston Chase, a name which sounds like it might be part of the eagerly awaited new League of Gentlemen series, is another West Indian batsman with a high backlift full of intent. He opens up with two boundaries from his first two deliveries, turning Roland-Jones into the legside.

They are the most difficult catches to take, on the follow-through. Powell punched it back and Stokes just swooped like a man picking an apple off a tree. It was a good catch.
