    Powell c and b Stokes 39 (WI 78-4)

Fabulous return catch from Stokes charging through the crease. It was very sweetly struck by Powell but Stokes stopped low to pouch it nonchalantly. England on a roll, with the two well-set batsmen back in the pavilion.

It was a sitter. He was so desperate to catch it because he's got the heebie-jeebies at the moment. That's the way to quieten the demons. Just as I was saying you have to pitch it up to get wickets, Roland-Jones finds the edge from back of a length.

Well he put two down on the last day at Headingley and one went to ground this morning but this one has stuck in and the proud look on Cook's face, like an infant getting their first gold star, is a joy to behold. The double centurion from Headingley is on his way.

  5. WI 74-2published at 14:34 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Powell 39, S Hope 25

Stokes is finding some swing and some movement off the seam with that slingy action of his but the old radar is not quite attuned as yet. He also tries a bouncer which is a delivery we haven't seen today. It's up in excess of 86mph and it might have beaten Powell for pace, he makes no contact with his swish at it.

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

No team has won a Lord's Test batting second since 2012, that was England beating West Indies. There have been 10 Tests since then, eight won by the team batting first and two draws.

  7. WI 74-2published at 14:30 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Powell 39, S Hope 25

Powell does not time this drive at Roland-Jones but it goes most of the way to the boundary and they collect three, the fifty partnership arriving from 96 balls. Sun shining brightly now, floodlights still on and charcoal grey skies beyond. A very strange day weather wise for the first September start to a Lord's Test.

  9. WI 71-2published at 30 overs

    Powell 36, S Hope 25

The combative Ben Stokes into the attack for the first time today. Immediate swing to start with but Powell calmly guides it wide of the slip cordon for his sixth boundary. Nice players to watch these two, some Caribbean style.

I'm slightly puzzled that, when previously the England bowlers have got Powell out bowling over the wicket, today they fancy bowling round the wicket.

  11. WI 64-2published at 14:23 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Powell 29, S hope 25

Hope looks at home again. Throughout the last Test in our house we found ourselves singing the Eddy Grant classic "Give me Hope Jo'anna". He's fairly small in stature is Shai but he is a delightful timer of the ball, there is an economy of follow through sometimes but the ball whistles away to the boundary and he collects another boundary to mid-wicket as Roland-Jones drifts on to the pads.

The scoring is slow. There's no great pace in the pitch, but you'd think they would try to push the scoring a little bit. Eventually, there will be a ball that gets you out, so you have to look to score to put the pressure back on the bowler.

  13. WI 57-2published at 14:19 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Powell 26, S Hope 21

Well Joel doesn't approve (14:11), but Broad has only conceded 24 from his 12 overs and even I can work out the economy rate there. Hope collects his fifth boundary, however, with a wristy flick off his pads to the legside fence.

It should be hard work to get wickets if batsmen have a decent mindset. It should be hard to get them out. I don't think it's easy for bowlers.

  15. WI 53-2published at 14:15 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Roland-Jones 0-6 (4 overs)

Another maiden for TRJ. Powell cuts flamboyantly but it goes straight to the gully fielder. I've got some new-style grapes and that's not slang. They're infused with strawberries. How long have they been a thing? It has made me think what innovations we could introduce to cricket. How about a small light on the top of the helmet, miner style?

Joel Elvidge: Broad has bowled awful all summer, wasted the new ball and down on pace yet no one questions his place.

  17. WI 53-2published at 14:11 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Powell 26, S Hope 17

A maiden for Broad to the cool cat Hope. Usual suspects in the crowd, the Barnsley mafia of Michael Parkinson and Dickie Bird chatting away amiably, not engaging John Major in the row ahead, who looks almost exactly the same as he did when was Prime Minister all those years ago.

There's been rain, it's quite chilly. It's not an easy day to play cricket.

  19. WI 53-2published at 25 overs

Jimmy will have to wait a little longer to get the 500th wicket as Roland-Jones returns. The Middlesex seamer has taken a wicket in each of the previous six Test innings he has bowled in so far but there is no way through on this occasion. The lights still on, the skies still menacing and a few empty seats as some spectators may perhaps have been distracted by the hospitality areas.

It's one of those low pitches. It looks really good to bat. If England bowl West Indies out for a low total, they will have done well.
