Powell has a high backlift so could be susceptible to the yorker at high speed - as are most players - but Broad is only in the low 70's mph in this one. There is movement, but no concern for the batsmen. Or for former England captain Mike Gatting, who is holding court in the hospitality area, looking more like Henry VIII by the day.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Along with Bairstow, Woakes has been England's most improved player over the past 18 months. He could have had an extra game for Warwickshire, then come back for this match if required. You don't want to be looking for match-fitness during a Test match.

    Powell 22, S Hope 16

Hope, the West Indian hero of Headingley with those two centuries, hit two boundaries in his first three balls this morning and he collects two more through the offside in this over off Anderson. Jimmy then beats him with an absolute peach, pitching on middle and moving away past the edge outside off. This should be a good contest.

Ian: Stuart Broad has mostly bowled poorly this summer, he can't be an automatic pick for much longer.

  5. WI 40-2published at 13:51 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Broad 0-20 (9 overs)

There is some watery sunshine as Stuart Broad charges in from the Nursery End, the media centre, behind him. There are still some hefty looking dark clouds over yonder and the floodlights are still on so it can't be easy for the batsmen out there. Powell makes it looks effortless, however, with a delightful drive down the ground for his fourth boundary.

The pitch looked good this morning, I couldn't see any blemishes. I saw no reason not to bat. What is intriguing is which West Indies side will turn up? We're not quite sure. We know what we'll get from England, we just have question marks over the three batsmen.

  7. WI 36-2published at 13:46 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Anderson 2-19 (11 overs)

Three slips and a gap to a man at fifth slip. Still some swing for Anderson but Hope, who got off the mark with a sumptuous cover drive to the boundary from the first ball he faced, keeps him out with ease.

So 35-2 after 20 overs of a truncated morning session then and the players are on their way out to the centre for the afternoon session. It's still a little overcast and it will be Jimmy Anderson to resume from the Pavilion End, needing one more for his 500.

Thanks Jack, I'm still thinking about the lunch menu, there are a few items there that could do some damage to my stringent health regime. I'd go for the tiramisu if my sister was making it but it feels more of an apple crumble and custard day.

Right, lunch is almost over for the players, which means that mine is almost about to begin.

Jamie Lillywhite will guide you through the afternoon session and I'll be back with you for the evening.

    Catch you then. Cheers.

My fourth choice is England bowling Australia out for 60 at Trent Bridge in the 2015 Ashes.

I remember our producer Adam Mountford yelling at me to hand over to Ed Smith but there was no way I was leaving as Stuart Broad reduced them to 15-4.

It was only because I handed over to Ed that Australia made as many as 60 runs.

It was amazing and I was very lucky. 15-4 was quite extraordinary.

I remember watching a Benson & Hedges cup match at Taunton where the West Indies quick Andy Roberts was bowling very fast.

Ian Botham came in down the order and played a heroic knock and took Somerset to victory.

I thought then this really might be some cricketer.

My favourite ground is Trent Bridge - the gatekeepers there are always welcoming and I think they have done brilliantly in redeveloping it.

My favourite ground overseas is the Adelaide Oval, with all the supporters gathering with plenty of liquid refreshment in their bottles.
