It's been an attritional morning for the West Indies, not easy in these conditions with the ball moving around. I don't think you'll see any short-pitched bowling, the West Indian techniques will be questioned because we've seen already Anderson has the ball on a string. If the conditions stay the same, with the lights on, it's going to be a really tricky afternoon for West Indies.

  2. Lunch - WI 35-2published at 13:05 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Powell 17, S Hope 8

Roland-Jones bowling a touch straighter at Hope, who is showing some nice touches to keep the Middlesex man out.

Two widers one to finish that Hope calmly leaves, taking us through to the lunch break.

An absorbing session, sadly interrupted by that rain break.

Some tremendous bowling from Anderson to pick up those wickets but Powell and Shai Hope have shown some decent resistance in tricky conditions.

Anderson sends the first three across Powell, who is happy to leave it alone.

The fourth comes back in but the Windies opener is quickly in behind to defend.

Another two that go across. No 500 before the interval as Powell leaves again.

Oh, looks like they're going to sneak in another over in before lunch. That's Anderson's work done for the session though. Another sterling effort.

Josh Withers: Strange hoping Jimmy doesn't get his 500th until the evening session so I can be watching in the local.

Simon Clarke: Praying for a day and a half of rain now. I'm there for day three and want to see the 500.

    Powell 17, S Hope 8

Nice start from Roland-Jones, just a single to Powell through point.

The Middlesex man nearly got Shai Hope to depart in the same way as his brother Kyle, wafting a half-shot, half-leave at a ball outside off. No nick this time.

James Anderson to bowl what should be the final over before lunch.

  7. Postpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

Toby Roland-Jones will enter the attack at his home ground, replacing Stuart Broad.

England searching for another wicket in the final 10 minutes or so before lunch.

  8. WI 34-2published at 12:52 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

Oooshk. That was very nearly 500 - Anderson getting it to hold up the slope and just move away, flirting with the outside edge of Hope's bat.

The number four survives, clipping the last off his pads but a decent diving stop from Tom Westley prevents the run.

    A tremendous maiden from Anderson.

I thought it was a brave decision to bat first, I felt today was a bowling day, get the ball in hand and move it around.

My son bought me a couple of bottles of wine from the Jimmy Anderson range for Father's Day, and I've been saving them for his 500th wicket. Hoping tonight's going to be a good night.

    Powell 16, S Hope 8

Broad goes too straight again to Powell, who flicks it away off his legs for another boundary - West Indies responding to that wicket with a flurry.

Powell is happy to leave the outswingers well alone, forcing Broad to bringing it back in but the Windies opener is then capitalising off his pads. Smart batting so far.

One or two have said Anderson has lost his zip but I think he's been a bit better than he has been in the last few years. We look too much at ages. With all the training and nutrition I think players can go on a bit longer these days.

Shai Hope, the conqueror of Headingley, replaces his brother.

The first man to score a century in both innings of a first class match at Headingley carries his fine form to Lord's, hitting two boundaries to slightly spoil Anderson's over.

A confident punch through the covers to the fence, followed by a guide past the slips off a shorter, wide one.

Alastair Cook looked to be in a good position to take the catch if Bairstow hadn't dived across to his right. It's just a matter of time before Jimmy gets his 500, I'm backing it to be before lunch.

    K Hope c Bairstow b Anderson 0 (WI 22-2)

    James Anderson moves to 499.

A lovely delivery, Anderson using the slope and his swing skills to draw Kyle Hope into a loose half-drive, half-leave.

Hope can't get his bat out of the way though as it flies off the outside edge and Jonny Bairstow dives to his right to take a fine catch.

The umpires make Hope wait as he trudges off for a duck to check the no ball but Anderson was well behind the line.

I think the West Indies have played pretty well and showed a lot of discipline. Wickets could go in clusters in these conditions.

  17. WI 22-1published at 12:37 British Summer Time 7 September 2017

    Powell 12, K Hope 0

Broad still round the wicket to Powell but he strays onto the pads and the Windies opener clips it crisply in front of square for four.

Decent response from Broad, getting one to wobble outside the off stump but Powell calmly drops it away for no run.

Better from the England quick, just back of a length but a lovely line as Powell plays and misses.

You have to say these are ideal bowling conditions. It's not a quick pitch and it's not zipping through but the lights are on and it feels like a nice day to get the ball in the hand and chip away at a few wickets.

  19. WI 18-1published at 13 overs

No rain delay sluggishness for Anderson, who is right back on the mark, sending down a jaffa that goes up the hill and beats the outside edge of Hope's bat.

You'd have to be in good touch to nick that.

Anderson starts with a maiden as Hope survives.

The players are back out on the pitch - we're looking at a close of play time later than 19:00 BST now, light and weather permitting.
